The UK Open Source Consortium (OSC) has lodged a formal competition complaint with Ofcom against Project Canvas (YouView), which aims to deliver an open standard for delivering subscription-free broadband ISP based internet TV services directly into homes via special set-top-boxes.

Shares in the TalkTalk Group ( AOL UK, Opal, Tiscali ) have jumped over the past few days after a Liberum Capital pegged the broadband ISP for a buy-out and pointed to Vodafone as a possible suitor. Shares in TalkTalk have risen on the news, growing by approximately nine per cent.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee (TimB), inventor of the World Wide Web (WWW), has told attendees at this year's Nokia World 2010 event that everybody should be given access to a "[free internet] data plan by default". He also warned that failing to protect Net Neutrality (the principal of treating all broadband internet traffic as equal) could kill the internet.

Ofcom has confirmed that contract dispute with Entanet (supplier) is the cause of a major one week long loss of broadband service at UK ISP Aspire Internet, which has affected both the providers retail customers and its resellers.

New research has found that just 25 Per Cent of ISPs now offer IPv6 to consumers. In addition, 10 Per Cent of polled ISPs have no plans at all to offer IPv6 to consumers or businesses!

ISP Orange UK has delayed the launch of its new range of Home Broadband and Phone packages until Friday. The current raft of four options has been replaced by three and form part of Orange's effort to improve their network image and customer service perception.

The CEO of Vodafone , Vittorio Colao , has told attendees at this year's Nokia World 2010 event that he welcomes the end of "unlimited" Mobile Broadband data plans. Colao also warned consumers that "data pricing has to adjust", thus signalling a greater focus on tiered pricing models.

Broadband ISPs have expressed anger at today's news from the UK government, which confirmed that they would be expected to pay for part of the costs associated with tackling internet copyright infringement (i.e. "illegal" file sharing) by their customers (here).

The UK governments Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has announced the result of its crucial internet copyright infringement "cost sharing consultation", a requirement of the Digital Economy Act 2010 (DEA), and revealed that Rights Holders (RH) will be forced to pay 75% of the costs for tackling online piracy while broadband ISPs will bear the remaining 25%.

The latest study of over 1300 consumers conducted by UK ISP Eclipse Internet has revealed that over 80 Per Cent know what bandwidth is but 62 Per Cent don't know how much they are allocated (usage allowance) on their broadband connection.

Customers of the small UK ISP Aspire Internet (formerly EurISP) have been left without broadband internet access for almost one week following a supplier dispute. The situation began last Wednesday (8th September 2010) after customers were abruptly disconnected from the service and found themselves unable to contact the ISP by either phone or email.

Market regulator Ofcom has signed Epitiro to help it test the speeds delivered by Mobile Broadband network operators in the UK, including O2 , Three (3) , T-Mobile , Orange and Vodafone . Back in June 2009 Epitiro used data from 1.4 million tests conducted around the country (here) to reveal that the average download speed was just 0.9Mb (uploads came in at 0.27Mbps).

The results from 395 respondents to our latest monthly survey have revealed that two thirds of UK people would still rather pick a standalone broadband ISP package (64.8%) than a bundle (35.1%) with other services (tv, phone etc.).

BT Wholesale has signed Cisco's Content Delivery System (CDS) to operate its long awaited BT Content Connect (BTCC) service and handle the growing demand for broadband internet video / TV services (e.g. Project Canvas UK). BTCC will be capable of caching popular video content, effectively on the ISP's own network, as opposed to dragging it over several Internet servers to reach the end-user; this lowers congestion, cuts costs and speeds up performance.

Mobile operator Three (3) (Hutchison3G UK) has revealed that it's investing £38.2 Million to expand its Mobile Broadband network in Scotland, which is 37% more per head than its investment for England. The move will double the number of 3G masts in Scotland, reaching over 1,400 by October 2010.
