A new YouGov study of 7,759 broadband connected adults in the United Kingdom (UK) has claimed that most ISP subscribers overpay by an average of GBP140 a year and 4.87 million (25%) have never switched provider.

BT has announced plans to trial a Fibre Only Exchange (FOX) service in the UK, which would see one lucky rural telephone exchange being upgraded to deliver nothing but the very latest superfast fibre optic broadband (FTTP) and phone services.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has released its latest annual report into the country's telecoms and media markets. The study found that 76% of UK homes are now connected to the internet and those with a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service tend to have higher satisfaction (80%) than those on traditional broadband (57%).

TalkTalk, a UK broadband ISP, has announced that it is it setup a new customer support centre in India. The move follows the signing of a new deal with Wipro BPO.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has thrown out plans by the government to force broadband internet providers (ISP) into blocking piracy websites. However ISP customers will now need to pay £20 in order to appeal against any accusations of involvement with internet copyright infringement.

Two lawyers working for the UK solicitors firm Davenport Lyons have been fined and suspended from practicing for three months over their role in "targeting [broadband isp customers] innocent of any copyright breach" with letters demanding huge cash payments.

German scientists have established a new world record for visible light communication (VLC) technology after they used different coloured Light-Emitting Diode (LED) light bulbs to create a wireless network that ran at speeds of up to 800Mbps (Megabits per second).

The IEEE has approved a new standard, 802.22, which allows wireless broadband networks to operate over the "white space" frequencies that exist to separate digital television (TV) channels on the VHF and UHF radio spectrum bands. 802.22 could deliver speeds of up to 22Mbps (Megabits) over a range of 100km, making it ideal for rural areas.

A UK based cable operator and media giant, Virgin Media, has confirmed plans to launch a free Wi-Fi wireless internet access service in London. This could be used as a stepping stone to a national county-wide deployment.

Cable operator Virgin Media has dominated the latest list of the top nine fastest broadband ISPs in the UK after it recorded an average download speed of 17.398Mbps. The national average download speed also grew to a respectable 8.313Mbps after both PlusNet and BT made big improvements.

Ofcom, a telecoms regulator for the United Kingdom (UK), has confirmed that it has no plans to force Virgin Media into opening up access to its cable ducts unless a complaint is brought. British Telecom ( BT ), which is already require to offer open access in order to support superfast broadband deployments, has frequently demanded that Virgin do the same.
