Network operator TfW Ffeibr (TFW Fibre), which is an arm’s-length initiative setup by Transport for Wales (TfW) and thus the Welsh Government, has today announced that their railway based full fibre broadband and Ethernet network has been extended off the Core Valley Lines train-tracks and into the heart of Cardiff’s city centre – all the way down to Cardiff Bay.

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today published their annual Media Use and Attitudes 2026 report, which among other things found that the proportion of UK adults without home internet access remains unchanged at 6%. Some 83% of that group are aged 65+ (66% for those aged 75+).

The £85.5m legal dispute between UK mobile and broadband giant Vodafone and a group of 62 current and former franchisees (here) took another turn this week after a High Court judge agreed to split the trial, with both sides appearing to agree that a single trial would have been too “complex and unwieldy”. But the decision may have a cost impact.

Mobile operator Vodafone (VodafoneThree) has announced that they’ve deployed their fastest 5G Standalone (5GSA) based mobile broadband network (indoors) across Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 Departures at Manchester Airport, while also improving existing 4G and general 5G network coverage. The move should help to cope with busy periods and deliver better performance.

The Horsham-based Telecom Acquisitions Group (TAL), which is a holding company for a number of familiar retail UK ISP brands (Home Telecom, Eclipse Broadband etc.), has announced that they’ve just acquired another small batch of 3,000 broadband customers from the remaining part of TalkTalk owned provider Origin Broadband.

Following on from this morning’s announcement of nexfibre’s network expansion across Bradford (here), we’ve now spotted that the operator also appears to have announced a similar £6.8m deployment to reach “up to” a further 42,000 premises in the West Sussex (England) town of Crawley with their full fibre (FTTP) network.

A new Censuswide survey conducted on behalf of broadband ISP Zen Internet, which involved 2,000 nationally representative UK consumers aged 16+, claims to have found that respondents are increasingly putting Wi-Fi (internet connectivity) above everyday essentials. For example, 36% say they would go without hot water rather than lose the internet.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve recently switched-on their next-generation 5G Standalone (5GSA / 5G+) mobile broadband network in 14 large towns and cities, 16 smaller towns and 252 rural villages across East Sussex (England), including Brighton and Hove.

Network provider Openreach (BT) has launched a new high speed Optical Spectrum Access (OSA) product called OSA Mobile. The new fibre optic data capacity link is designed to connect UK street furniture (lampposts, street cabinets, etc.) to support the rollout of 4G / 5G Small Cells and front haul applications for mobile operators, as well as public WiFi hotspots, CCTV and broadcast applications etc.

Alternative broadband network operator Netomnia (Substantial Group), which has deployed their own full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 3 million UK premises RFS (inc. 460,000 customers), have announced that their long-running deployment across the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester has now reached 30,000 premises (RFS).

Network operator nexfibre, which is in the process of merging with Netomnia (here) and shares some of its parentage with ISP partners Virgin Media (O2) and giffgaff, appears to have announced a new investment of £9.9m to expand their full fibre broadband network across 61,000 premises in Bradford (West Yorkshire, England).

The government has revealed that a new satellite developed in Scotland by Spire Global UK, which features an innovative optical (laser) inter-satellite link (ISL) payload, has just been launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-16 mission. The mission aims to “significantly reduce data latency” between satellites, which could aid aviation, maritime, weather and space-weather services etc.

The mobile operator division of supermarket chain ASDA, which is powered by a virtual network operator (MVNO) agreement with Vodafone, has just today refreshed four of their Pay Monthly SIM-Only mobile plans (both in 12-month and 24-month minimum terms). At the same time they’ve also remove four of their older plans.
