The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of broadband and mobile provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2), Jeanie York, has today confirmed that they’re “set to complete” their switch-off of the old legacy 3G mobile network “in the coming weeks” – largely as planned (although a few areas will still have 3G signals into “early 2026“).

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net service, has this morning published a new analysis of mobile 4G and 5G network data performance across UK local authorities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK-wide median mobile download speed rose 15% to 63.03Mbps in 2025, but big gaps remain.

Banking and money management app provider Revolut, which earlier this year revealed plans to launch a full domestic mobile service for UK consumers with unlimited calls, texts, and 5G data (mobile broadband), has – after a long wait – finally started to deploy the new service to customers for an introductory offer of just £12.50 a month.

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) and technology partner Freshwave have today revealed that they’re working with the Surrey County Council (SCC) in England to expanded their 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network coverage across Guildford City Centre. This is being achieved via the deployment of 13 new outdoor small cells.

A new report from the cross-party House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee has warned that “unacceptable” delays caused by the Building Safety Regulator’s (BSR) approval processes are leaving residents waiting for remediation of dangerous cladding in unsafe buildings, causing increased costs for leaseholders and also impacting the roll-out of new digital infrastructure.

Consumer energy, broadband, mobile and insurance provider UW (Utility Warehouse), which is ultimately controlled by Telecom Plus, has recently become the latest virtual mobile network operator (mvno) to start introducing eSIM (Embedded SIM) support to their service.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today approved UK mobile companies and satellite operators to join forces and use the airwaves (mobile spectrum bands) to support Direct to Device (D2D) services, which will allow standard unmodified Smartphones to connect via satellites to improve 4G and 5G (calls, texts and broadband) coverage in remote areas and roaming.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has once again come top in the annual 2026 umlaut connect UK Mobile Network Test, which deployed a range of different benchmarks to test 4G and 5G performance (voice and broadband) across 16 cities, 24 smaller towns and along 10,170km of major roads. On the flip side, O2 (Virgin Media) continued to be ranked at the bottom.

Customers of mobile provider Talkmobile, which is a virtual operator (MVNO) on parent Vodafone’s (VodafoneThree) national UK 4G and 5G network, have been notified that they too can now “automatically use both the Vodafone and Three networks” (i.e. the new Multi-Operator Core Network or MOCN – detailed here and here).

Mobile operators across the world, including some of Starlink’s own partners, have been put on notice of greater competition after SpaceX’s CEO, Elon Musk, hinted he might use his mega-constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites to launch his own mobile network. Musk has now filed to trademark the name “Starlink Mobile“.

Some 46,000 consumers have been given extra time to resolve connectivity problems with their Energy Smart Meters, which were previously at risk of losing 2G based mobile data connectivity to the Data Communications Company‘s (DCC) wide area network on 1st January 2026. But Ofgem has now extended the service coverage until 1st June 2026.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has given its blessing to the “early 2026” introduction of short “notice, short duration licences” for outdoor and indoor use in the 2320-2340MHz radio spectrum band, which could support everything from pop-up 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) coverage to TV broadcasting etc.

A new survey from Viasat and the GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association), which questioned 12,390 mobile phone users across twelve markets (including the UK), claims to have revealed the “booming consumer demand” for Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite services (mobile calls, texts and internet data).

Wireless infrastructure firm Cellnex UK has today announced that they’ve partnered with the Harrow Council in London to deploy Small Cell technology across the Borough’s street furniture, which will target 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) connectivity “blackspots” around high streets and transport hubs.
