A new benchmark of mobile network performance (voice and broadband) across the Greater London area, which was conducted by the little known NET CHECK organisation, has revealed that Vodafone UK beat rivals at EE (BT), Three UK and O2 (Virgin Media) to be named as the best performing operator.

New research from network operator Virgin Media (VMO2) and economic consultancy Cebr has claimed that £65.1bn could be added to the UK economy and employment could be increased by 6.8% (creating an additional 284,000 new jobs), but only provided all rural areas get access to “excellent digital connectivity“.

Benchmarking firm nPerf has just published the results from their annual 2023 crowdsourced study into UK mobile broadband (4G, 5G) performance, which sees Three UK taking the crown of best mobile network operator from EE (BT) for the first time. On the flip side, O2 (VMO2) came last, which is becoming somewhat of a trend.

Mobile operator Vodafone has revealed that they’re working with the Church of England, and using Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) technology, to help extend 4G mobile (mobile broadband) into remote rural communities by deploying small base stations on top of 11 church bell towers across the country.

The BT Group has published a rather limited Q1 FY24 (quarterly) trading update to June 2023, which includes very few of the usual details but does reveal that Openreach’s roll-out of a full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network (coverage) grew by 718,000 UK premises in Q1 to total 11 million (up from 702k last quarter).

Contract-free mobile operator VOXI, which is a virtual operator (MVNO) sibling of Vodafone UK, are now offering both new and existing customers the ability to triple their data allowance on their £12 and £20 a month data plans. On top of that, they’ve also added unlimited music streaming for plans priced £12 and up.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics (Ookla) has published their latest biannual H1 2023 study of UK mobile network (4G and 5G) and mobile broadband performance, which sees EE (BT) continue to pick up awards across all of the categories. But in terms of 5G data speeds, Three UK remains the operator to beat.

Wireless infrastructure provider Freshwave has revealed that they’re working with the One Nine Elms (R&F Properties UK) site in London to deploy in-building mobile connectivity for all four mobile operators in the two towers – including in the lifts, which the company claims is somewhat of a first for a residential development.

Vodafone UK has today published their latest Q1 FY24 results, which saw fixed line broadband ISP base grow to total 1.265 million customers (up by 42k in the quarter vs 65k in Q4 FY23), while their mobile base increased to 18.024 million (up by 104k vs 118k in the previous quarter).

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has revealed that 532,651 tennis-fans attended The Championships 2023 and tracking shows that over 64 TeraBytes (up by 36.5% from 2022) of mobile broadband data were consumed by Wimbledon-goers during the two-week tournament, which was also one of their first roll-outs of 5G Standalone tech.

Ofcom has published its 2023 Mobile Matters report, which uses Opensignal’s crowdsourced data (collected between 1st October 2022 and 31st March 2023) to benchmark the performance of UK mobile data (mobile broadband) networks by both technology (3G, 4G and 5G) and operator choice – including Three UK, O2, Vodafone and EE.

A new report from technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint, which examined the impact of a single network deployment, claims to have proven that investing in better rural mobile connectivity will bring “significant economic, social and environmental benefits” for those it covers.

Customers of EE‘s mobile and home broadband ISP packages may like to know that the UK network operator has now joined forces with NVIDIA to launch a new range of “great value cloud gaming offerings“, which include membership of the ‘GeForce NOW’ cloud gaming service (access to over 1,600 games).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed an alternative way of solving the debate over whether WiFi or mobile broadband (5G) should benefit from the extra capacity (i.e. faster speeds) available in the Upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) – “hybrid sharing“.

The latest research from Ookla, which operates the popular broadband connection testing service Speedtest.net, has revealed that Smartphone users using 5G based mobile broadband networks suffer between 6% to 11% higher battery drain than for those using 4G.
