Cornwall UK Sets Aside £5.8m to Extend Superfast Broadband

The Cornwall County Council in South West England has agreed to create the “Superfast 3 – Inclusive Growth” broadband project at a total cost of £5.835m, which could extend the reach of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) to “at least” 2,700 additional premises (mostly homes and 546 businesses).

North Wales Sets Out Gigabit Full Fibre Plan to Connect Public Sites

The North Wales Economic Ambition Board (NWEAB) has today set out its plan for investing up to £7m from Wave 3 of the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) programme, which will see Gigabit capable fibre and “ultrafast broadband” services being used to connect up to 400 further public sector sites.

Ookla Sees UK Fall in Global Rank for Mobile and Broadband Speeds

The latest data from broadband speed testing giant Ookla (Speedtest.net) has revealed that the United Kingdom is now ranked just 42nd in the world for fixed broadband ISP download speeds (61.75Mbps average) and a dismal 49th for mobile (30.93Mbps), which compares with 29th and 46th respectively in January 2018.

In-between skipping TV leadership debates the current front-runner to be the United Kingdom’s next Prime Minister, Boris Johnson MP, has made the rather striking pledge toward “delivering full fibre [broadband] to every home in the land” by 2025. Naturally he fails to say how this would be funded or even possible.

UK Ranks 5th in 2019 EU Broadband Connectivity Progress Study

The European Commission has published their 2019 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2018 to reveal how the UK’s fixed line broadband and mobile networks compare with the rest of the EU. This year we jumped in overall rank from 6th to 5th out of 28 countries but are only 10th for connectivity.

Scotland’s R100 Broadband Contract Delayed Until End of 2019

The Scottish Government’s Minister for Connectivity, Paul Wheelhouse, has confirmed that contracts for the £600m Reaching 100% (R100) superfast broadband project won’t now be signed until the “end of the year,” which suggests that the rollout may be unable to complete by the end of 2021 (March 2022 financial) as planned.

Faster Broadband for 113 GPs and 680 Homes in Essex and Hertfordshire

The UK Government has handed £2.1m to support a bid by the West Essex and East Hertfordshire Digital Innovation Zone and Superfast Essex projects, which will extend superfast broadband to 113 doctors surgeries and 680 homes across the Broxbourne, East Hertfordshire, Epping Forest, Harlow and Uttlesford areas.

Rural ISP Gigaclear Ends 2018 with 93,000 Full Fibre UK Premises

Rural ISP Gigaclear, which has been struggling to deploy a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to some of England’s most challenging communities, has posted its results to the end of 2018 and revealed that they now cover 93,000 premises (up 58% over 2017) and have 19,000 live customers (up 30%).

Devon and Somerset UK to Offer Community Broadband Funding

The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has announced that it is looking for ISPs to help support the launch of a new funding scheme, which is due to launch later in 2019 and will help rural communities to get a faster broadband network built. Meanwhile Gigaclear has been given a deadline to get their FTTP plan sorted.

Cross-Party MPs Launch Another UK Rural Broadband Inquiry

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA) has launched a “short” inquiry that aims to examine the remaining problems with gaining access to superfast broadband ISP connectivity, mobile signals and accessing digital-only services in remote rural parts of the United Kingdom.

B4RN to Hit 6000 Rural FTTH Broadband Customers and Raises £2m

Plucky rural UK ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is deploying a community built and funded 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to remote premises in several counties across England, expects to achieve 6,000 live connections by the end of June and has raised £2m via crowdfunding.

5300 Extra Premises in Cambridgeshire UK Set for FTTP Broadband

Some 5,300 additional homes and business in Cambridgeshire look set to benefit from Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP technology. The news follows a new deal between the council and Openreach (BT), which will help to achieve their ambition for 99% “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage by the end of 2020.

£200m UK Rural Gigabit Broadband Connectivity Programme Starts

The UK Government has today officially launched their new £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which was originally announced during the 2018 Budget and aims to encourage an “outside-in” approach to building new ultrafast broadband ISP networks by focusing on helping to connect rural areas.

Rural UK ISP Gigaclear Fined £10,339 for Roadworks in Somerset

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear has been fined £10,339.17 in Somerset UK after it admitted that some of its work, which involved deploying a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network around the small market town of Wellington, had failed to comply with the 1991 New Road and Street Works Act.

Welsh Gov Admit Subsidised Rural FTTP Broadband Coming to an End

The Welsh Government’s Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport, Lee Waters AM, finally said something last week that has been becoming increasingly obvious over the past few years, “we need to confront the fact that the market’s appetite, even with subsidy, for reaching premises with [FTTP] broadband is coming to an end.”

Durham UK Council Prep Phase 3 Superfast Broadband Rollout

Government Re-brands UK Broadband and Full Fibre Programmes

The Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has decided that it has too many different named broadband and “full fibre” programmes and as a result they’ve today opted to simplify by aligning all of them under just two overarching programmes – ‘The UK Fibre Programme‘ and ‘Building Digital UK‘.
