Customers of broadband and energy provider Shell Energy may like to know that the ISP, despite recently being placed up for SALE by its parent (here), has still found time to introduce a new Wi-Fi 6 capable router that is made (casing) from 100% recycled plastics. A Wi-Fi6 capable signal booster device is also being planned.

Some of Vodafone’s broadband ISP customers, specifically those covered by Openreach’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, have been unable to take a package faster than 200Mbps because of capacity problems, which for some of those affected has been going on for several years. But some issues are getting resolved.

Budget broadband ISP Plusnet has today finally launched a SOGEA powered Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) package, which is a standalone broadband connection that removes the accompanying phone service. Sadly, the provider still shows no sign of offering existing customers a digital (IP-based) phone solution.

Some 400 homes across the rural Oxfordshire (England) village of Ardington have been left disconnected from their broadband and phone services for almost two weeks, which occurred after criminals stole more than 500 metres of underground copper cable from Openreach’s local network.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has discounted two of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) powered “Ultrafast” (145Mbps) and “Gigafast” (900Mbps) packages, which drops the price on an 18-month term to just £31 and £49.50 a month respectively (returning to £43 and £63 after the first contract term). A small £5 setup fee is also charged.

Network access provider Openreach has faced complaints from residents in the small rural Wiltshire village of Little Cheverell, which occurred after most of the community was left cut-off from broadband ISP and phone connectivity for three weeks due to a tree that fell and damaged the operator’s overground pole network.

Openreach’s (BT) long road toward completely switching off their old copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in December 2025 is set to hit a major milestone on 5th September 2023, when it places a UK wide “stop sell” on sales of new Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and related broadband ISP products.

Network access provider Openreach has announced a new special offer on bandwidth modifies, which essentially makes it cheaper for UK ISPs to upgrade customers on Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) and SOGEA broadband lines to an 80Mbps max download (20Mbps upload) speed.

A few years ago we reported that Openreach (BT) had moved to accelerate and expand their rollout of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology into more challenging rural areas by installing “Subtended Headends” (SHE). The technology has now saved them £10m in build costs in the last year alone (Fiscal Year 22/23).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has made it easier for UK broadband ISPs that want to migrate existing customers on slower copper-based ADSL, FTTC (VDSL2) and G.fast lines to faster full fibre (FTTP) ones, which they’ve done by introducing a new discount for their related “Proactive Upgrades” service.

Homes and businesses in the Hertfordshire (England) market town of Tring have faced several days of disruption to their broadband ISP connectivity, which occurred after rodents with a taste for optical fibre chewed through one of Openreach’s (BT) main high capacity fibre trunking cables in the area.

Broadband, phone and mobile giant BT Group (inc. Openreach, Plusnet and EE) has this morning announced that it has chosen Allison Kirkby, the current President & CEO of telecommunications multinational operator Telia Company in Sweden since early 2020, to replace Philip Jansen in the role of CEO.

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has started the procurement phase for the award of their first major Cross-Regional Supplier Framework (Type C) contract under the £5bn rural Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which could see a single network operator being picked to help cover some of the most challenging areas.

The BT Group has published a rather limited Q1 FY24 (quarterly) trading update to June 2023, which includes very few of the usual details but does reveal that Openreach’s roll-out of a full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network (coverage) grew by 718,000 UK premises in Q1 to total 11 million (up from 702k last quarter).

In June, we reported on how Openreach were “exploring whether it’s practical” to deploy public EV chargers next to some of their 90,000 UK broadband cabinets (here). The good news is that BT, via their start-up and Digital incubation team, Etc. (that’s the actual name), plan to run a pilot that will “convert or upgrade” its cabinets for EV charging units.

Internet provider Giganet are today reporting that they’re investigating a problem across their national UK network, which may be causing some leased lines (Ethernet) and full fibre (FTTP) broadband customers to experience degraded service quality.
