Internet, phone and TV provider Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that they’ve begun to trial a new “Smart Security” internet protection feature, which is initially being rolled out to “thousands of [eligible] customers” with their latest Hub 5 broadband router at “no extra cost“.

Customers who have accounts with both broadband ISP Virgin Media and mobile operator O2 have, since 14th November, begun to receive emails that invite them to create a single online ID to access both accounts for the first time. The move comes a little over two years after the companies completed their merger deal.

Some existing and former customers of TV, phone and broadband provider Virgin Media (VMO2) are complaining that the ISP is continuing to hit them with wrongful Netflix subscription charges, which is despite those impacted having either never taken the service or cancelling it months ago. The problem has gone unresolved for months.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has published their Q3 2023 results, which sees their UK full fibre (FTTP) coverage via nexfibre expand to another 250,800 premises (up from 175.5k in Q2) and their fixed broadband base rise to 5,708,100 (up by 40.8k in Q3 vs -15.3k in Q2). VMO2 has also sold a 16.67% stake in Cornerstone for £360m.

Virgin Media and O2 have reportedly entered “exclusive talks” that could see them selling off a big stake in the UK’s largest mobile tower network to GLIL Infrastructure. The deal is said to value this part of their business at around £2.5bn, with any proceeds helping to fund their full fibre (FTTP) broadband and 5G mobile roll out.

A new report from the cross-party Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has revealed that an estimated 7 million Smart Meters are at risk of losing data connectivity when the old 2G and 3G mobile communications networks are closed by 2033. Mobile operators Three UK, O2 (VMO2) and Vodafone have reportedly warned the government that the first phase of their £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project, which aims to extend geographic 4G (mobile broadband) coverage (aggregate) to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025, is at risk of being delayed by 2 years.
