NDO Launches NEWT Anti-Virus/SPAM

Posted: 28th Aug, 2004 By: MarkJ
UK ISP NDO has, following an investment of £100K and 12 months development, launched their NEWT (NDO Email Without Trash) Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus protection system (free to existing customers):

Today, after £100,000 investment and 12 months in development NDO launch their NEWT Anti-Spam and Anti-Virus Protection System. NEWT stands for "NDO Email Without Trash" and that is exactly what this system is designed to deliver - it removes the trash from NDO users' mailboxes. After 3 months of intensive testing involving 600 beta-users the spam filters have proved to be 85-90% accurate and virus removal is 100% effective.

NEWT is almost unique amongst anti-spam protection solutions offered by ISP's in that the customer has complete control over the strength of the spam filter and can also choose how the system handles spam emails. Suspect emails can be automatically transferred to a special "Spam Folder" within the Inbox stored on the NDO servers for checking (using the NDO webmail facility) without the need to download them to the customers local machine. NEWT also includes user defined white-lists and safe email addresses.

Customers using SMTP delivery will receive their mail marked as Spam for local sorting.

To see how NEWT operates - please see: http://www.ndo.com/en/1/newtsupportsets.html

NDO's NEWT with Anti-Spam support is available free of charge to all NDO POP3 email, Dialup, Unmetered, Broadband, Domain and Web hosting customers. Existing users will have their accounts upgraded over the next few weeks and they will then have the option to activate the anti-spam feature. Alternatively customers can visit NDO WebMail at www.webmail.ndo.com and follow the instructions to upgrade instantly. Anti-Virus protection is an optional extra powered by the industry-leader Symantec.

Full details on NDO's NEWT are available online at: http://www.ndonewt.com including real-time statistics on spam detection rates and virus removal.

For the technically curious, NDO's NEWT Email Platform has been designed to handle in excess of the 4 million emails that NDO users receive every day, utilising a fully and dynamically resilient server-cluster, collectively offering 92ghz of processing power and over 1 terabyte of storage space. The operating system used is Debian Linux and NDO's Development Team developed the mail-server software entirely in-house with spam-detection carried out through the use of rule matching, Bayesian analysis, Kohonen networks and email volumes statistics.
