Communications and TV provider Virgin Media has launched a rather unusual PR assault on its chief rival, BT Retail, by getting fashion model Danielle Lloyd and a bunch of her friends together for a special advertising message about broadband speeds.

cheeky virgin media uk broadband
"BT? Fast broadband? My arse!"

Jon James, Virgin Media's Executive Director for Broadband, said:

"Consumers deserve to know the truth; that ADSL broadband, far from speeding up, is slowing down as we reach the end of the line for copper broadband. This cheeky stunt was simply a humorous way to get across a serious message - that customers should demand what they are being promised from their internet providers."

We do agree with this remark: "customers should demand what they are being promised from their internet providers." Of course that door swings both ways for Virgin Media too, which also has 250,000 or so Virgin.net ADSL / ADSL2+ broadband subscribers on its own service.

It's perhaps not the most tasteful way of promoting a broadband service but is certainly more entertaining than most we've seen, unless you're a woman of course.. in which case the two guys on the end seem a bit lonely.

UPDATE 2:45pm

As one reader reminded us in the comments, peak download speeds are only part of the equation. Upload performance is another critical aspect and in that area Virgin Media usually comes second to O2 and Be Broadband , which use ADSL2+ technology.

I don't think they have forgotten it - they know their service is DSL and they've said DSL is inferior to cable.

They launched speed honesty stuff on DSL way back!

Let say why isn't Virgin Media isn't the fastest upload speed compare to ADSL2+ upload of 1.5Mbps and Be there are higher than VM.

VM just shut up and get your uploads increasing!

Quote "Jon James, Virgin Media's Executive Director for Broadband, said: "Consumers deserve to know the truth."

Is that the same consumers who deserve to know the truth that you are advertising your fastest broadband speed as endorsed by the "INDEPENDENT REGULATOR" Ofcom in your letters to customers because you came top of their so called independent UK ISP broadband speeds league tables.

I don't see you being very honest that you are top of a carefully selected group of six or seven isp's. Hardly fair and honest or representative of the UK ISP market is it. Not to mention the fact that it is your cable service rather than copper adsl being compared as per the others in that league table.

You can't even provide those speeds to the same footprint area that BT and others cover so hardly fair and what about the contention in "YOUR" network - Just look at what your customers say!

Cable - http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/virgin_adsl.html

ADSL - http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/virgin_adsl.html

Slow speeds, slow after 6pm, traffic shaped etc. etc.

Customers tell the truth in the main.
