Ofcom has published a new Analysys Mason report that examines the cost of various civil engineering technologies for deploying superfast fibre optic broadband ISP services in the United Kingdom. It reveals that roll-out costs could be slashed by 10% if some of the latest innovations were adopted by BT and others.

The communications regulator has published its annual 2012 Infrastructure Report, which claims that “close to” 100% of premises in the United Kingdom can now receive a broadband service (71% take-up) and just 10% can only get sub-2Mbps speeds (down from 14% in 2011). Superfast broadband (25Mbps+) is also available to 65% of homes and businesses (7% take-up).

Ofcom has today begun to set out plans that will eventually enable the release of new airwaves (UHF radio spectrum), such as the controversial 700MHz and 600MHz band used by Digital TV services, which could be used by a future generation of 5G Mobile Broadband or WiFi style internet solutions. But it will be 2018 before anything happens.

The Cotswold Broadband (CBB) project, which aims to roll-out an open access and 100Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to 90% of home and businesses in the Chipping Norton area of west Oxfordshire (England, UK), has released an Investment Prospectus and laid its first fibre optic ducts.

The Open Rights Group (ORG) has applied for permission to intervene in a court case between Golden Eye International, which holds the copyrights for various adult films (Ben Dover), and O2 UK. The move could potentially help to stop up to 6,000 of the ISPs customers receiving dubious internet piracy claim letters.

Two residents of Shelone Road in the south Wales (UK) town of Briton Ferry (Llansawel) have expressed anger and frustration towards BTOpenreach engineers, whom were allegedly rude to them, after one of BT’s new superfast broadband (FTTC) street cabinets was installed outside their home.

The annual uSwitch.com Mobile Awards 2012, which took place this week in London’s Covent Garden (Circus) area, have named Three UK as the Best Mobile Network and the Fastest Network for 3G based Mobile Broadband speeds. The operator was also crowned as the best network for roaming.
