Budget broadband and phone provider TalkTalk has passed a significant milestone after they reported that Internet data traffic on their network in the United Kingdom had recently peaked at over 1Tbps (Terabits per second) and “regularly reaches 990Gbs a day” (note: they mean 990Gbps and not total daily use).

The European Parliament’s ITRE Industry Committee has this morning voted in favour of the new Telecoms Single Market Regulation, which proposes a raft of changes including measures to protect open Internet access from abuse by ISPs (Net Neutrality), ending EU mobile roaming charges, coordinating spectrum for wireless/mobile operators and various other measures like easier switching between broadband providers.

Mobile operator Three UK has, much as we predicted last month (here), today dropped unlimited Mobile Broadband Tethering support from its “all-you-can-eat” data based tariffs and replaced it with a 2GB (GigaByte) usage cap. On the upside.. calls to 0800, 0808 and 0500 numbers are now free from mobiles too.

The growing crisis on Europe’s border between Ukraine and Russia, which centres on a dispute over ownership of the Crimea territory, took an unusual twist yesterday after it was spotted that Sky Broadband and other UK ISPs appeared to be restricting access to Ukrainian news site Tsn.ua. Oddly Sky claims it was blocked for being on a “white list” of websites (note to Sky: normally you unblock those).
