After a lot of media and political pressure the £51m Connecting Cumbria project in England has published a higher resolution copy of their “Final Coverage” map for the local Broadband Delivery UK and BT supported roll-out of superfast fibre broadband services. Now if only there were some roads and other details (postcode data?) or maybe we’re just being picky.

Customers of TalkTalk have today become the unwitting recipients of the ISPs latest ‘Pricing Notification’ update, which has revealed a raft of price rises for line rental services (e.g. an increase from £15.40 to £15.95), call charges and broadband packages.

UK members of the hugely popular WordPress.com website, which allows users to setup their own blogs using WP’s Content Management System (CMS), have been reporting a variety of access a usability problems with the service since the beginning of last week. A big finger of blame is now being pointed at TalkTalk’s Internet filtering.

Cardiff-based Spectrum Internet has become one of the first UK ISPs to demonstrate how the government’s £150m Urban Broadband Fund (UBF), specifically its Broadband Connection Vouchers scheme, can be used by several businesses to “collectively pool their funding together” for the roll-out of a fibre optic based 1 Gigabit capable connection.

It’s only a drop in the ocean but BT has agreed to repay over £1.2m to fully unbundled (LLU MPF) ISPs and phone line providers, such as Sky Broadband and TalkTalk, after a “mistake” in its response to an earlier Ofcom review of the operators charge controls meant that a key piece of information was left out.

Internet users that have chosen to replace their broadband ISPs own Domain Name Servers (DNS) with Google’s free Public DNS alternative, which translates IP addresses into human readable form and vice versa, had a bit of a shock over the weekend when their traffic was redirected (hijacked) and sent to BT’s Latin America division in Venezuela and Brazil.

The Hampshire Superfast Broadband Programme in England has named the next batch (Phase 2) of 21 local communities that can expect to benefit from the councils state aid supported roll-out of BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services. A reasonably useful deployment map is also available.
