The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has tonight announced the winners of its 16th annual 2014 Internet Industry Awards, which saw Hyperoptic’s urban FTTH service pick-up the prize for ‘Best Superfast Broadband’ and PlusNet secure a win as the ‘Best Consumer Fixed Broadband’ provider. But there were many more categories and awards.

Mobile operator Three UK has come top in a new Road Trip 2014 study of Mobile Broadband performance, which among other things found that the provider delivered both the fastest average 3G (4.48Mbps DOWN and 1.4Mbps UP) and 4G (6.19Mbps DOWN and 1.54Mbps UP) based mobile Internet speeds. Meanwhile EE was a close second.

The European Commission (EC) has today moved to complement their Digital Agenda project, which aims to make broadband speeds of 30Mbps+ available to all EU homes come 2020, by launching a new “Connected Communities” initiative that offers additional funding and support to local community broadband partnerships and operators.

BT’s “ultrafast” fibre optic based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which can currently deliver Internet download speeds of up to 330Mbps (30Mbps uploads), has revealed that the operators national network is now covering “nearly” 150,000 homes and businesses (premises passed) across the United Kingdom.

The government will today announce emergency legislation that many fear could be an amended version of its controversial RIPA or Communications Data Bill (CDB) which, before it was shelved for a second time, aimed to extend the United Kingdom’s existing internet snooping powers by requiring ISPs to log a much bigger slice of everybody’s online activity; regardless of whether or not you’ve ever committed a crime.
