PlusNet has informed ISPreview.co.uk that their 8 month old customer trial of a YouView (IPTV) based broadband TV service is “going very well“, but sadly even after all this time they’re still unable to give any indication of when a commercial launch might occur.

BTOpenreach has announced their intention to pilot a new capability (GEA-FTTC Start and GEA-FTTC Stop) from 22nd September 2014, which will in the long run enable them to provision superfast broadband (FTTC) lines at a faster and cheaper rate than is currently possible. But there is a caveat involved.

New and re-contracting customers of TalkTalk who wish to benefit from the ISPs annual pre-paid line rental discount (aka – Value Line Rental) will be unhappy to learn that they’ve quietly hiked their prices and this time it’s a fairly dramatic adjustment.

Most of you probably won’t have noticed but a sizeable chunk of the global Internet suffered a brief period of instability and slowdown today (around 9am BST), which occurred after an error with Verizon’s autonomous systems and Cisco’s older routers caused a critical Internet routing limit to be reached. It will probably happen again too.

Sony has given broadband ISPs another set of data hogs to worry about after they confirmed that consumers in the United Kingdom would be the first in Europe to beta test their new PlayStation Now streaming service in 2015, while their PlayStation TV product (designed to take on Google Chromecast and NOW TV etc.) is expected to surface this autumn 2014.

A regional press advert for Virgin Media’s old cable broadband, phone and TV bundles (specifically the ‘Premiere Collection’) has been banned for being “misleading” by the Advertising Standards Authority after Sky (Sky Broadband) complained that the comparison with its rival ‘The Family Bundle’ was wrong.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a TV advert for BT’s superfast “fibre optic broadband” BTInfinity (FTTC) service after an individual complained that the second set of on-screen text, which contained several significant conditions, was not clearly legible.

Existing customers of cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) have begun to receive letters that warn of another price rise, which will take affect from 1st October 2014 and see subscribers paying an additional £1.50 per month for their broadband service.

BT has confirmed that new and existing TV (IPTV) customers will be able to watch the new Sky Sports 5 channel, which is dedicated to European Football, on their BT Vision+ set-top-box when it’s launched by Sky today (channel 524). But standard broadband (non – BTInfinity) subscribers will have to wait a few weeks longer.

JT Global (Jersey Telecom) reports that some 10,000 customers have now subscribed to their 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network on Jersey (Channel Islands), which is up from 8,479 in June and 7,600 in March 2014.

A new Royal Mail commissioned study of 1,412 adults in Britain with access to “superfast broadband“, and 1,710 adults with no superfast service, has discovered that having faster connectivity boosts online sales and this equates to an increase in spending of 3.1% (around £23 a year) per superfast broadband user.

Fibre optic infrastructure builder CityFibre, which now has close to £50m of investment ready for use in various cities and towns across the United Kingdom, have reached a new agreement with Easynet (formerly MDNX) that will allow them to “significantly” upgrade the operators Public Service Network (PSN) in the metropolitan borough of Kirkless.

The incumbent ISP for Hull and its surrounding areas in East Yorkshire, KC (KCOM), has announced that they’re “laying claim” to the title of “village with the fastest broadband speeds in Britain” after pegging Brantingham for the achievement thanks to its average download speed of 78Mbps. Gigaclear and B4RN may have a thing or two to say about that.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project in England has failed to match the full level of £22.75 million in funding offered by the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) Superfast Extension Programme, but it’s not a big deal because they still expect meet the national target and bring superfast broadband to 95% of the area by 2017.
