Cable operator Virgin Media has today officially launched their new SuperHub 2ac (VMDG490) router, which has been leaking out to customers for quite a few months (here) and includes support for the latest 1300Mbps Gigabit WiFi (802.11ac) standard. According to Virgin’s research, the WiFi is now faster than all of the other big UK ISPs.

The Nottingham City Council and BT have today signed a new contract that will see the telecoms operator deploy free public WiFi wireless Internet hotspots across much of the city centre, which should benefit 310,000 residents as well as local businesses and visitors etc.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has concluded a yearlong probe into EE’s (also trading as Orange UK and T-Mobile) handling of consumer complaints and found that “there are reasonable grounds for believing” that the operator broke its rules (General Condition 14.4).

Customers of BT’s consumer broadband service should avoid using the ISPs Home Hub routers for business style VoIP phone setups because of a seemingly deliberate built-in weakness that, no matter what security settings you choose on the hub, it will always leave port 5060 open.

South Yorkshire (England) might have been late to the Broadband Delivery UK game, due to the infamous Digital Region disaster of prior years, but after last year’s signing of a contract with BT to upgrade the area we’re pleased to report that the project now has an official deployment map.

Customers of TalkTalk’s home broadband service in the United Kingdom, specifically those who use one of the ISPs older D-Link DSL-3680 routers (check the model code on the back), should be aware that for some people the hardware might be vulnerable to an easily performed remote DNS hijack.

In an unsurprising move BT has agreed to extend their contract with the Scotland-based Emtelle Group, which manufactures cable duct (plastic piping that encases underground fibre optic cables) as well as sub-duct and blown fibre products at its two plants in Hawick and Jedburgh, for another four years until 2019.
