A new study has phoned some of the United Kingdom’s biggest and smallest broadband ISPs in order to work out how quick their call answer times were. The results reveal that the big boys (e.g. PlusNet and KC [Hull only] etc.) are among the slowest, while smaller providers tend to be the fastest (e.g. Exa Networks and B4RN etc.).

The latest Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2015-2019 report from PwC has predicted that revenues from Mobile Internet access (Mobile Broadband etc.) are set to overtake fixed line broadband services in 2017, increasing by an annual growth rate of 7.1% to reach £7bn by 2019 (the highest in Western Europe).

Remote rural areas in Northern Ireland have been given yet another boost after a further investment of £1 million was extracted from the Tackling Rural Poverty and Social Isolation (TRPSI) budget in order to help expand the reach of faster broadband and fuel uptake.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has successfully nudged the Advertising Standards Authority to ban a TalkTalk press advert, which was ultimately ruled to have misleadingly claimed to offer “Britain’s Best Deals on totally unlimited broadband packages“.

A new security audit, which was manually conducted by a group of security researchers as part of their IT Security Master’s Thesis at a Madrid University in Spain, has uncovered multiple vulnerabilities with 22 different home and office broadband routers, including popular brands like Huawei, Netgear, Zyxel, D-Link, Linksys, Belkin and Sagem.

A new research note from Berenberg Bank has estimated that BT’s on-going £12.5bn effort to buy mobile operator EE could in the long-term be good news for investors, but they also predict that it will result in Virgin Media ending their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) deal with the UK mobile giant.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today announced that customers of their 4G (LTE) based mobile plans in the United Kingdom will now be able to make use of the same connectivity and their existing allowances (included calls, texts and Mobile Broadband data) while roaming across a total of 58 destinations worldwide.

Last year saw mobile operator Three UK make a clear commitment concerning mid-contract prices rises by telling customers that the “fixed monthly recurring fee from Three will not go up in the minimum term of your contract,” but they now appear to have done a U-turn.

The Superfast Dorset scheme in southern England, which is already working with BT to make faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services available to 97% of local premises by the end of 2016 (95.6% will get “superfast” speeds of 24Mbps+), has today signed a Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract that will push close to universal coverage.

Budget ISP Fuel Broadband will today reduce their £5 per month standard unlimited broadband (up to 16Mbps) bundle to being free for the first 6 months of service (includes free UK evening and weekend calls), although customers still need to take Phone Line Rental for £16.40 per month on top. But the offer is also masking a price hike.

Urban fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic, which offers home broadband speeds of up to 1000Mbps across parts of several major UK cities (particularly London), will today reduce its prices for the first 12 month contract term to new customers.

The Premier League and FA have succeeded in having the UK High Court force all of the markets largest broadband ISPs (e.g. BT, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and EE) into imposing blocks against three additional sports streaming websites that are known to infringe copyright (Rojadirecta, LiveTV and Drakulastream).

Ofcom’s easier broadband and phone switching rules are due to go live later this month (20th June). However one provider, AAISP (Andrews & Arnold), is so concerned about how it might result in more cases of slamming (i.e. consumers being switched without their consent) that they’re now offering a free “anti-slamming” service.
