The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK project has released its latest Q2 2016 take-up data for the state aid supported roll-out of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which shows that many local authorities are seeing 30% adoption of the new service and that will help reinvestment.

A new report from the IPPR North think-tank has claimed that small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are lagging behind other businesses in the “Northern Powerhouse” (northern England) region due to a “double-whammy of patchy … broadband connectivity” and lack of digital skills.

A new BT commissioned report from Analysys Mason has perhaps unsurprisingly warned that Ofcom’s effort to encourage alternative network (AltNet) ISPs to build rival ultrafast broadband networks, such as by opening up access to Openreach’s cable ducts, may fail to achieve the desired result.

Telecoms giant BT and Japanese electronics firm Toshiba have today teamed-up to demonstrate the future of secure data communication via quantum cryptography, which works by delivering secret keys over fibre optic cables via the “smallest possible packets of light.”

Fibre optic ISP TrueSpeed Communications has confirmed that their roll-out of a symmetric 150Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the rural Chew Valley area of North East Somerset (England) is now in the process of reaching three more local communities.

Sky has today published their latest quarterly trading update, which is very vague and sadly includes no new information on the size of their Sky Broadband base. On the upside we finally get a progress update on the imminent launch of their new O2 (MVNO) based Sky Mobile service.
