After a long delay Cityfibre has today confirmed that their contractors have started to build Phase One of a new Gigabit capable fibre optic broadband (FTTP) network in the centre of Glasgow (Scotland), which will be connected up to an existing 31km long network in the city and serve local businesses.

Earlier this year we reported on how people in the Cheshire village of Ollerton were ready to pay BTOpenreach £35,000 to get a “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) service installed (here). Today we learn that BT has made use of the Government’s 2Mbps rural USC subsidy to help pay for the roll-out.

BT has today tried to show its “positive and direct impact on the UK economy“, and hopefully fend off some calls for Openreach’s separation, by publishing a report which claims that they spend more than £9.3bn a year with UK suppliers and boosted the economy by £23.1bn (GVA) during the past year.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, claims to have found “reasonable grounds for believing” that some of EE’s customers may have received inaccurate bills that “over-[charged] them for calls they made to its customer service number, 150, whilst roaming in the EU.”

UK ISP TalkTalk has written a letter to the CEO of the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme, Chris Townsend, which warns that “serious conflicts of interest” may exist if they continue to use research provided by Analysys Mason, an analyst firm that is also assisting BT in a number of related areas.

A new study of Mobile Network Operator performance in the United Kingdom by P3 communications has named EE and Vodafone as joint winners after both tied the top spot in their examination of data (Mobile Broadband) and voice related network quality; both received 803 points out of a possible 1,000.

After a slightly longer than expected wait Virgin Media will today take the wraps off a new 4G (LTE) powered Virgin Mobile service, which is fuelled by their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with EE.

The Welsh Government’s Superfast Cymru project will shortly receive a public funding boost of ‘up to’ £80 million in order to help roll-out “fast reliable broadband” to “every property” in Wales by 2020.

Cable broadband operator Virgin Media has informed ISPreview.co.uk that they plan to adopt the Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) standard by the middle of 2017.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today unveiled a new range of 4G (4GEE) SIM-Only, 4GEE WiFi and 4GEE Tablet price plans, which are apparently “designed to offer customers increased choice and flexibility” in how they access the network. But some of the changes also reflect a small price increase.

The Country Land and Business Association, which represents land owners and rural businesses in England and Wales, has warned that the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) initiative to make tax digital could “throw the rural economy into chaos” due to the on-going lack of fast and reliable broadband.

Cable Internet and TV provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has published their latest quarterly results (calendar Q3 2016), which saw growth in their broadband base improve to total 4,867,900 customers (up by +59.9K vs +42.7K added in Q2). On top of that around 2 million premises will now benefit from ultrafast FTTP broadband.

BT’s Chief Network Architect, Neil McRae, has told the UK IPv6 Council that their roll-out of the Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) addressing standard was completed for “all BT Broadband lines” in October 2016 (except IPstream connections.. so not quite “all“), provided you have a compatible router.

The Welsh Government’s Superfast Cymru contract with BT, which has been working to roll-out “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) to 96% of Wales, has been criticised by Assembly Members for failing to deliver on its original promise to bring 30Mbps+ capable networks to all premises by 2015.

Mobile operator EE has revealed that they’ve “switched on” IPv6 Internet addresses for new subscribers during 2016 H2 (a mix of dual-stack with IPv4 and some IPv6-only), at least for those with supporting devices (legacy devices remain on IPv4). Work will now begin to migrate their existing users.

Cable operator WightFibre, which serves homes and businesses on the Isle of Wight (an island just off the south coast in Hampshire, England) with TV and broadband speeds of up to 152Mbps, has announced the completion of a major network upgrade that has “increased capacity 32 times over“.

The International Airlines Group and Satellite ISP Inmarsat have announced that in-flight WiFi will be introduced to 341 short-haul aircraft, including 132 British Airways, 125 Vueling, 45 Iberia and 39 Aer Lingus aircraft.
