Some 3,500 additional premises in the South Gloucestershire (England) town of Bradley Stoke have benefited after Virgin Media announced that they had completed an extension of their 350Mbps capable cable (HFC EuroDOCSIS / FTTP) broadband and TV network in the area.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that their pilot of 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast broadband technology is being significantly expanded to include 26 new locations across the United Kingdom (1 million premises by the end of 2017). Various areas from Liverpool to Cardiff are on the list.

A new survey from YouGov, which was commissioned by Cobham Wireless, has revealed that British adults would rather connect to the internet on trains via a 3G or 4G mobile data network (51%) than public WiFi (36%), yet only 33% of passengers felt that the mobile signal was good enough.

Cable operator Virgin Media has sent out invites for 100 employees to join a “secret” trial of their long awaited Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) network upgrade. Sources inform ISPreview.co.uk that accepted users will need to be connected to Virgin’s broadband service via a Hub 3.0 router.

Openreach (BT) has today proposed to cut the wholesale rental price of their mid-tier 330Mbps (50Mbps upload) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) “ultrafast broadband” lines, which will make the service cheaper to buy for a 12 month period and that could help to encourage greater uptake.

The rise of mobile phones has meant that very few people see any need for BT’s public payphone boxes anymore and as a result the operator has decided to scrap 13,400 of them over the next three years, with an additional 6,600 expected to be removed by 2022.

The proposed Dark Fibre Access product from Openreach (BT), which would have allowed rival ISPs to gain “physical access” to the operator’s existing fibre optic cables (i.e. enabling them to install their own equipment at either end of the fibre within cable ducts), has today officially been cancelled.. for now.

The broadband division of UK retailer John Lewis has announced a price cut to their “fibre broadband” (FTTC) and phone line rental bundles, which will last for the first 12 months of service and should be available to order until “at least” 3rd October 2017.

A new report from techUK, which represents 950 companies in the United Kingdom’s technology sector, has called for “near universal” coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) by 2020 and 90% coverage of “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) to become a reality by 2025.

New customers who join EE’s fixed line home broadband and phone services should note that the provider has cut their prices a little for the first 18 months of service (available until 21st August 2017). Existing 4G Mobile customers will also benefit from an extra 5GB on their data allowance.

Five of BT’s new InLinkUK kiosks in London have just been tested to see if they’re able to deliver WiFi speeds of close to the advertised “up to 1Gbps” capability. Sadly the average speed after 43 tests was 47.4Mbps download and 44Mbps upload, with a standard download deviation of 19.5Mbps.
