A number of major broadband and phone providers (e.g. Sky Broadband and TalkTalk) have been affected in central South London after several core fibre optic cables were “damaged” by hungry rodents, which has kept thousands of customers offline since last night.

Communications provider Vodafone has decided that being one of the cheapest providers of unlimited “fibre broadband” (FTTC) services isn’t good enough and so they’re giving new and upgrading customers a “cool gift” worth up to £199, provided you order before 9th September 2017.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has warned that it is “legally questionable” for BT to recover up to £600m of the costs incurred for their proposed 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation deployment by extracting the money via charges for products providing access to Openreach’s local access networks.

The problem of advertised vs real-world broadband performance expectations has been given new ammunition by consumer magazine Which? today. A study conducted by the group found that the overall speeds recorded in internet speedtests were only 58% of the speed that users were expecting to get.

The firm behind the Speedtest.net service, Ookla, has reintroduced a monthly country ranking of global mobile and fixed broadband speeds. In their first report we find the United Kingdom ranked 24th fastest in the world with an average download of 49.22Mbps (fixed) and 25.83Mbps (mobile).

The UK telecoms regulator has hit KCOM, the incumbent telecoms and broadband provider for Hull in East Yorkshire, with a fine of £900,000 after “a serious weakness” in their network resulted in 74 calls to the emergency services failing after a BT telephone exchange in York flooded during Storm Eva.
