Mobile operator EE (BT) and Huawei have conducted their first UK lab test of an end-to-end 5G network, which delivered a consistent download speed of 2.8Gbps (Gigabits per second) using an active antenna unit with 64×64 MIMO broadcasting via the 3.5GHz radio spectrum band.

A new study from consumer magazine Which? has used data taken from over 700,000 speed tests conducted by Speedchecker Ltd (between January and March 2017) to claim that broadband ISPs could be overestimating their service speeds by up to 62%. Save for a few BIG caveats.

UK Internet provider TalkTalk has today published their interim results for the 6 months to 30th September 2017 (H1 2018), which reveals that they added +46,000 new on-net broadband subscribers in the period to total 3,993,000 (29% of those use their FTTC/H “fibre broadband” network).

A new ruling against Plusnet by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) means that UK business ISPs will now also need to combine the price of phone line rental and broadband when advertising related packages, which is a rule that has previously only applied to residential services.

The Government has unveiled a £2m trial that offers vouchers worth between £500 to £3,000 to help businesses in four areas around the United Kingdom to get a Gigabit (1000Mbps+) broadband service installed, which is focused on helping to extend “full fibre” (FTTP) infrastructure.

The UK Government’s Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme, which offers grants worth up to £400 to help homes and business that are unable to access a broadband speed of at least 2Mbps, has so far issued over 10,000 voucher codes and consumed £3.1m of its budget. But it’s also about to end.

Vodafone has published their latest Q3 2017 (calendar) results, which saw their fixed line broadband base grow by +33,000 in the quarter to total 278,000 (better than the +29K added in Q2). Meanwhile 4G Mobile coverage (population) has reached 97% of the UK and they’ve cut their FTTC prices.

Around 60 homes and businesses in the remote rural Sutherland hamlet of Altnaharra (Scotland) can now access Openreach’s (BT) new 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) “ultrafast broadband” network, thanks to new equipment and a community dig to lay 4,800 metres of cable.

SSE Enterprise Telecoms has today announced a new deal with Thames Water, which is the UK’s largest water and wastewater company, that will enable them to extend their fibre optic broadband and ethernet network by laying new cables through the sewers. Fibre-in-the-Sewers (FITS).

Wireless UK infrastructure firm Arqiva has today signed their 14th concession agreement in London, which will give them access to install their 4G / 5G Mobile Small Cells and WiFi access points on up to 16,000 lampposts in the Borough of Waltham Forest for the next 10 years.
