As expected Ofcom has today set out the final details for their new automatic compensation system, which will force UK ISPs to compensate consumers (cash or bill credits) for a total loss of broadband connectivity, albeit only under certain circumstances (e.g. the outage lasts longer than 2 working days).

Fixed wireless broadband and fibre optic ISP Solway Communications has installed a new mast near Moota, which will help to expand their signal coverage area to include Cockermouth and more parts of West Cumbria in England (this doesn’t yet appear to show on their website’s coverage map).

UK ISP BT has cut the price of their ‘up to’ 76Mbps Unlimited Infinity 2 (FTTC) broadband and phone bundle, which has been reduced from the previous offer of £49.99 a month for 18 months to just £39.99 for new customers (£56.49 thereafter). They’ve also added a £150 Reward Mastercard.

In a major development Cityfibre and ISP Vodafone have this morning announced a new “long-term strategic partnership” that will bring Gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTH) broadband to “up to” 5 million homes and businesses across the United Kingdom by 2025, with the rollout starting by mid-2018.

Fixed wireless ISP Boundless Networks has announced that their 150Mbps capable ultrafast broadband network has been extended to reach businesses in the rural Ribble Valley area of Lancashire UK, with firms in the large rural village of Whalley (population of 2,700) being among the first to benefit.

Cable operator WightFibre has this week taken the wraps off their plan to deploy a new “full fibre” (FTTH) ultrafast broadband network to cover 53,000 of the 61,000 homes on the Isle of Wight (Hampshire, UK) by the end of 2022, which is being supported by an investment of £35 million (Infracapital).

Kent-based ISP True Telecom, which is under investigation by Ofcom for their handling of service migrations (here) and was recently find £85k by the ICO for “making illegal nuisance calls” that gave “the impression they were from BT” (here), has gone into administration.

A number of Vivaciti‘s customers have reported being incorrectly billed by the broadband ISP after their billing switched from being in-house to Entanet (now part of Cityfibre), which related to a change of their wholesale provider (note: phone lines are still with Vivaciti and the RID code is unchanged).

The Cambridgeshire County Council has announced the completion of their Phase 2 Broadband Delivery UK contract with Openreach (BT), which has successfully expanded the coverage of FTTC/P based fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 95% of local premises by the end of 2017.

Customers of BT’s consumer broadband packages will be irritated to learn that the ISP has announced another round of price hikes for 7th January 2018, which we can’t describe as annual rises anymore because they’ve craftily announced them way earlier than usual.. again.

Some 70 homes in the rural village of Crai, which sits inside the mountainous Brecon Beacons National Park area of Wales, have finally been covered by a ‘up to’ 30Mbps capable fixed wireless “superfast broadband” service after local ISP Dyfed Superfast expanded their network into the area.

Satellite Solutions Worldwide, which owns Satellite broadband providers Europasat, Avonline and fixed wireless operator Quickline, has gobbled another batch of two UK ISPs after it announced the acquisition of BeyonDSL and Clannet Broadband (they also acquired Eidsiva Breiband AS in Norway).

Mobile operator Vodafone has claimed that a major upgrade of their fibre optic and mobile infrastructure means that Gatwick Airport now has the “most reliable” and “fastest” 4G based Mobile Broadband speeds of any UK airport within their coverage. Speeds of up to 200Mbps are said to be possible.

The annual Templeton Bonfire and Fireworks Night in Devon had somewhat of a different theme this year after the rural community, which has long struggled with slow sub-1Mbps broadband speeds, decided to burn an effigy of Openreach’s (BT) van.

The CEO of Luminet, Sasha Williamson, has told ISPreview.co.uk as part of our new interview that the United Kingdom should focus on deploying Gigabit capable broadband networks “nationwide” and that the plan for a 10Mbps minimum download speed (USO) is “laughable in this digital age.”

Customers of Virgin Media Business‘s “Voom Fibre” cable broadband products are suffering from a long running problem due to how the operator handles Static IP addresses on their Hitron router, which can result in VMB’s up to 350Mbps packages struggling to deliver a fast and stable service.
