Fibre optic (FTTP) infrastructure builder Cityfibre has today soft launched their new 1Gbps broadband and Ethernet network for SME businesses and public sector sites in the cities of Leicester and Nottingham, although local firms won’t be able to connect to the new service until this autumn.

Alternative network provider WarwickNet (CableCom) has appointed a new Director of Sales, James Warner, to help oversee a major expansion of their broadband coverage. Over the next 12-18 months the ISP hopes to grow its footprint from 180 to 750 UK sites (e.g. business parks).

Last month Three UK threatened Ofcom with a Judicial Review unless they changed the rules of their 4G and 5G radio spectrum auction in order to aggressively curb EE’s (BT) dominance (here). Now EE has issued its own letter before action in order to defend against such measures.

The Citizens Advice agency has estimated the cost of BT, Virgin Media and Sky Broadband’s proposed voluntary system for handling automatic compensation, which would be paid during a total loss of broadband service. But consumers could receive 32% less than via Ofcom’s own plan.

Blink and you’ll miss it. Yesterday we reported that Sky Broadband had cut the price of their top four broadband and phone bundles (here) but what everybody missed, ourselves included, is that Sky had technically launched a new ‘up to’ 52Mbps FTTC package called ‘Sky Fibre Unlimited Plus‘.

All of the biggest UK internet providers seem to be cutting their prices this month and now Sky Broadband has joined by slashing the monthly rental of their packages across the board. On top of that new customers will also receive a £100 Prepaid MasterCard gift when they join.

Internet provider TalkTalk has cut the price of their up to 38Mbps (9.5Mbps upload) “Faster Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) and phone line rental package back down to £25 per month for the first 18 months of service (£33.50 thereafter), which will be available to order until 14th September 2017.

A new survey from YouGov, which was commissioned by Cobham Wireless, has revealed that British adults would rather connect to the internet on trains via a 3G or 4G mobile data network (51%) than public WiFi (36%), yet only 33% of passengers felt that the mobile signal was good enough.

Cable operator Virgin Media has sent out invites for 100 employees to join a “secret” trial of their long awaited Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) network upgrade. Sources inform ISPreview.co.uk that accepted users will need to be connected to Virgin’s broadband service via a Hub 3.0 router.
