The boss of UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, has taken the unusual but welcome step of asking subscribers to give their thoughts on how the provider should enhance or change their future broadband and line rental tariffs, which are currently being reviewed.

The Government of the United Kingdom has this week started a new consultation on their proposal to introduce 100% business rates relief for new “full-fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband networks (estimated to be worth £60m), which will run from 1st April 2017 to 31st March 2022.

The Northumberland County Council, which is currently working with Openreach (BT) to expand the coverage of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) connectivity to 95% of local premises by the end of 2017, has launched a new £2.2m community fund that could benefit a further 2,000 premises.

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) has announced that it will significantly reduce their 10GE and 100GE (Gigabit) port fees at its regional internet exchange in Manchester (IXManchester), which will come into effect from 1st October 2017 and save up to 39.3% on the cost.

Utility infrastructure provider GTC (Brookfield Utilities UK) appears to have responded to Openreach’s (BT) increasingly attractive FTTP “full fibre” broadband offer for new build home developers by enhancing their rival proposition via the Home Builders Federation, which makes it more accessible.

Researchers from ADTRAN and BT are working towards conducting the first lab trials of G.mgfast technology in 2019, which could become the successor to today’s hybrid-fibre G.fast technology and one that might conceivably push broadband speeds up to 5-10Gbps over traditional copper lines.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise has announced that Openreach (BT) have completed their original state aid supported Phase One roll-out of faster “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) services to the remote Scottish archipelago of Orkney, which forms part of the wider £410m Digital Scotland project.

Openreach (BT) has announced that 160 homes at two villages in Devon (Hockworthy and Holcombe Rogus) have become the first to benefit from a boost to grant funding under the operator’s Community Fibre Partnerships scheme, which works with locals to roll-out new “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) networks.

The Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK programme has published its latest progress update to the end of June 2017, which confirms that the scheme has so far helped 4,551,226 extra premises across the United Kingdom to be put within reach of a fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network.

The latest uSwitch.com survey of 2,004 “nationally representative UK adults” has claimed that over 43 million home broadband users (83%) suffer from poor reliability. But despite more reliable “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) being available to 93% of homes, just 57% of Brits believe they can access it.

The Post Office has joined the summer discount club by slashing the price of their ‘up to’ 38Mbps and ‘up to’ 76Mbps capable unlimited “fibre broadband” (FTTC) and phone bundles for the first 18 months of service. On top of that their one-off activation fee has been cut from £60 to £30.

Wireless infrastructure developer Arqiva has won a new 10 year concession contract in the Royal Borough of Kingston-Upon-Thames (London), which will enable them to improve 4G and future 5G mobile coverage by installing Small Cell (radio access nodes) telecoms infrastructure.

Last year “industry sources” indicated that Vodafone could be planning to build their own “full fibre” network in the United Kingdom (here). A new report claims that they are now in “early but serious” talks with Openreach (BT) about the prospect of a joint investment on a “large-scale” FTTP/H build.

The Superfast Cornwall project, which has a long term aspiration to deliver 99% coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) by 2020, has today taken the next step by signing a new deal with Openreach (BT) that will put a further 7,000+ premises within reach of 1Gbps “full fibre” (FTTP) by 2019.
