The Citizens Advice agency has claimed that 6 out of 10 broadband users have suffered from slow speeds or had their connection stop working in the last year. As a result they are calling on the government to “strengthen the voices of telecoms consumers” by establishing a consumer advocate.

Sky’s sibling NOW TV video streaming platform has announced that UK customers will soon be able to take their contract-free broadband ISP and phone service, albeit without needing to bundle it alongside TV as part of a “Combo“. A new NOW TV Smart Stick (Roku) is also being introduced.

Fixed wireless ISP Voneus has today announced an interesting new partnership that will enable them to offer residential and business customers a wide range of 1Gbps capable broadband services, albeit via Gigaclear’s ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in rural parts of the United Kingdom.

In an unsurprising development the Highlands and Islands Enterprise has announced that their Community Broadband Scotland (CBS) initiative, which provided public funding to help setup new alternative broadband networks in very remote rural areas, is coming to an end.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today published their latest results to the end of December 2017 (financial H1 2018), which reveals that Fibre (FTTC) penetration increased to 33% (up from 21% last year) of their UK broadband base but there’s still no sign of their Sky TV without a satellite dish (IPTV) service.

The Welsh Government (WG) has suggested that it will next week publish information on new rollout plan for “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services, which could set out their strategy for extending related networks to cover the whole of Wales (benefiting approximately 98,145 additional premises).

Phone and broadband provider Gateway Telecom (GW Telecom Ltd.) has been hit with a fine of £20,000 after the national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, ruled that they had broken the rules by “not enabling a customer to keep their telephone number when switching to another provider.”

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has confirmed that customers of their existing Mobile platform will, at the end of their current contract(s), be given the choice of either switching to a completely different Mobile operator or taking out a special deal on one of O2’s plans.

After a long wait Virgin Media has announced that existing UK customers of their broadband, phone and TV bundles will now be able to take advantage of a FREE upgrade to the cable operator’s new 4K Ultra-High Definition (UHD) ready V6 set-top-box. The offer comes with no re-contract requirements.

Customers of SSE (Southern Electric) should note that the ISP is changing the monthly price of all phone and broadband packages for non-existing SSE energy customers, which means that those without an energy plan will no longer pay a £5 surcharge on their monthly bill for the first 12 months.

The Aylesbury Vale District Council in Buckinghamshire has set out details and a timetable for their review into the Aylesbury Vale Broadband project, which after concerns over rollout progress and funding was recently sold (FTTH network assets) to UK ISP Gigaclear for an undisclosed sum.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority has today “provisionally” ruled that 21st Century Fox’s £11.7bn bid to takeover Sky (Sky Broadband) by acquiring a 61% stake in the company (Fox already owns 39%) is “not in the public interest,” due to concerns over media plurality.

A new survey of 2,500 UK consumers, which was conducted by business and tax advisory firm EY during Aug 2017, has revealed that 56% of UK households spend more time on the internet (inc. streaming) than watching TV (up from 49% in 2016) and 77% think of broadband as a utility service like gas etc.
