Internet Movie and TV video streaming giant Netflix UK has recently published the latest update of their broadband ISP speed index, which reveals that cable operator Virgin Media is still the fastest provider for their service in 2018 and also going all the way back to 2014. But being the fastest here doesn’t really matter.

A number of broadband ISPs including TalkTalk, Hyperoptic, Cityfibre and Gigaclear, as well as the Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), have written to the UK Government and Ofcom in the hope of encouraging tougher measures to prevent Openreach (BT) from hampering “full fibre” (FTTP) competition.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has begun their New Year sale early by discounting the prices of their dual-play ultrafast broadband and phone packages back down to levels not seen since the Black Friday week. For example, the price of their top 350Mbps package is now just £37 per month for 12 months (£57 thereafter).

The Mobile division of BT (BT Mobile / EE) has begun recruiting for a new “Auto-PAC Switching” trial, which they say aims to ensure that the “improvements we are putting in place give the best customer experience possible when porting a mobile number / account from one supplier to another.”

The infrastructure equity investment arm of M&G Prudential, Infracapital, has purchased a 50% stake in UK communications provider SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET). The deal itself is said to be worth up to £380m and values the provider at more than £700m.

The Christmas period seems to have encouraged UK ISP Vodafone to reduce their fixed line “superfast broadband” (FTTC) and phone prices to a rock bottom level, which means that new customers can take their 35Mbps (average speed) service from £20 a month or 63Mbps from £24 (non-Voda mobile users pay +£2 more).

UK ISP Baltic Broadband and the not-for-profit Liverpool Internet Exchange (IX Liverpool) have today jointly announced that their 10Gbps business focused fibre optic network in Liverpool (Merseyside) has been expanded to include the Everton and Vauxhall areas.

As expected Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that the wholesale price of their 40Mbps (10Mbps upload) Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband tier will drop by -£8.08 (-11.6%) from 1st April 2019. Some smaller changes for unbundled (LLU MPF and SMPF) and Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) are also confirmed.

A new report from Global Wireless Solutions has noted that mobile operators (O2, EE, Vodafone and Three UK) have “turbo boosted” their 4G coverage across major motorways in the UK since 2017, with the M6 seeing double what it had over a year and a half ago.

UK ISP Sky Broadband appears to have started the January 2019 Sales early by reducing the monthly cost of their Unlimited Sky Fibre Max (63Mbps average speed FTTC) broadband and phone bundle to just £27 for the first 18 months of service (£43.99 per month thereafter).

Mobile operators EE and Vodafone have come top in P3‘s annual 2018 UK Mobile Network Study, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 3G and 4G (voice and data / broadband) covering some 26% of the population in 22 cities, 35 towns and along 7,300 miles of major roads.

The move supports the provision of 100G channels across the UK.
