ISP Vodafone has today gone live in 7 UK cities with their new 5G based ultrafast mobile broadband network. At the same time they’ve moved to challenge Three UK by introducing a new range of SIM-only and handset plans with “unlimited data” (also on 4G services). A new home broadband (FTTC) and mobile bundle is coming too.

Ofcom has today deemed Openreach to be making “real progress” in their on-going efforts to become a distinct “legally separate” company away from BT, although the UK telecoms regulator seeks more “transparency” around their efforts to increase independence and solid details on their future FTTP broadband plan beyond 2020.

Google (Alphabet) has announced that Loon, which is a long-running project that aims to distribute mobile broadband (4G / 5G) connectivity from High Altitude Platforms (stratospheric balloons), will in a few weeks time see its first commercial trial take place in Kenya (Africa).

Alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP Trooli (CallFlow), which last month secured nearly £27m (€30m) from European investors (here) and aims to cover 500,000 premises across the South East of England by the end of 2024, has signed a £3.5m deal with marketing firm Cheeky to help promote their new network.

A new wayleave (land access) agreement means that cable operator Virgin Media will now be able to extend their 500Mbps+ broadband and TV network to cover an additional 2,700 homes in the north of Manchester, which once completed will give them a total coverage in the metropolitan region of 714,000 premises.
