London ISP Community Fibre Launch First 3Gbps Broadband Plan

London-focused broadband ISP CommunityFibre has today become the first provider in the UK to launch a symmetric speed 3Gbps (3000Mbps+) package for homes, which is now the fastest available speed being offered to residential customers covered by their new network in the capital city (over 100,000 premises).

Unexpected Charges Add c.£39 to Average Annual UK Mobile Bills

A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch, has claimed that “unexpected charges” (e.g. extra costs for roaming, calls etc.) are adding nearly £38.90 on average to consumers annual mobile bills (around 32% of respondents were affected by this – equating to a national total of £489m).

Mobile operators Three UK and Vodafone appear to be taking a leaf out of BT’s (including EE and Plusnet’s) book by becoming the latest telecoms operators to announce annual price hikes that will go beyond their usual RPI or CPI (inflation) linked increases. But with COVID-19 triggering another lockdown their timing couldn’t be worse.

Cumbria Hamlets Dig 1.5 Miles for Openreach’s FTTP Broadband

Two remote rural hamlets in the Eden district of Cumbria (England) – Raisbeck and Sunbiggin – can now access a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network after a local farmer helped to bring Openreach’s (BT) rollout costs down by excavating more than 1.5 miles of trench across 10 fields.

5G Mobile from Drones – Cambridge Consultants Hail New Antenna

Technology firm Cambridge Consultants (CC) and Stratospheric Platforms Limited (SPL) have collaborated to build a new kind of wireless antenna, which could be installed on aircraft (e.g. drones) operating at an altitude of 20,000 metres and used to distribute 5G mobile broadband services over areas up to 140km in diameter.

L8r Huawei – Vodafone to Deploy OpenRAN in Wales and England

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has taken the bold decision to upgrade 2,600 sites (e.g. masts supplying 4G and 5G services), mostly in rural Wales and South West England, by using kit supplied as part of the new Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN). The sites are currently served by Huawei.

Low cost broadband ISP TalkTalk has confirmed that they’ve today stopped selling paid TV Boosts (premium channel packs) and the internet provider intends to begin “phasing out” the boosts completely in 2021. Instead the company will be doubling down on their integration with the NOW TV video streaming platform from Sky.

Nothing to worry about, move along please. Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media has “taken steps to ensure [port 7547] is no longer discoverable” online after they left it open on some routers. The good news is that this “posed no security risk” to customers, but it remains unclear why it occurred.
