A new report from mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has used the data they gathered for their previous H2 2020 study (here) to rank 16 of the United Kingdom’s largest and fastest cities by their average (median) download speed on 4G and 5G networks. Liverpool came top with an aggregate speed of 43.6Mbps.

Worcestershire-based wireless and full fibre broadband ISP Airband, which aims to roll-out their ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover over 500,000 premises by the end of 2025 (here), has appointed the former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of rival ISP Gigaclear, Charl Tintinger, to take up the same role.

Six street markets in the London borough of Westminster, including Church Street and Berwick Street among others, claim to have deployed a new “superfast” public WiFi network to help local traders, customers and visitors get online via a “gigabit-speed outdoor wireless” broadband connection.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has confirmed that a further 35 towns and cities across the United Kingdom have started to go live on their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network, which brings the total location count to 160. Some of the biggest additions include York (Yorkshire), Dundee (Scotland) and Swansea (Wales).

The existing Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of broadband ISP and TV operator Virgin Media UK, Lutz Schuler, has today been named as the overall CEO for the combined company that will exist once the proposed £31bn merger (50-50 joint venture) with mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) completes in the near future.

Ofcom has confirmed that their automatic compensation system, which requires some UK ISPs to compensate consumers (cash or bill credits) for various broadband connectivity mishaps and service delivery delays, is to increase its payment amounts each year in line with inflation (even if the provider’s own prices have reduced).

A new blanket council wayleave agreement, which has been approved by social housing provider Wolverhampton Homes and CityFibre, looks set to see the latter extend their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to cover more than 22,700 extra homes in the West Midland’s (England) city.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today published their latest annual 2021 Internet Users report, which reveals that 6.3% of adults (3.36 million) in the UK had never used the internet in 2020 (down from 7.5% in the prior year). As usual the lack of adoption is highest among the oldest adults and those with disabilities.

Internet provider Hyperoptic, which builds 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks to large residential (MDU) buildings, office blocks and some houses, has today appointed the former Chief Commercial Officer of mobile operator Three UK, Richard Woodward, to be their new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

As part of their £5bn Project Gigabit programme the UK Government will this week (8th April) start a new rural focused £210m gigabit broadband voucher scheme. A quick look at the new Terms and Conditions for this reveals some key changes, such as the inclusion of satellite, a £100k funding cap on project changes and other caveats.

Openreach (BT) has reportedly restarted talks with a number of big UK broadband ISPs (e.g. TalkTalk, Vodafone) over the development of discounted long-term wholesale agreements for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service, which were paused last year after rivals like Virgin Media raised competition concerns.

A lot of UK people have tried tethering their Smartphone’s mobile broadband (4G, 5G) connection to a laptop by using the ‘Wi-Fi Hotspot‘ feature, but not everybody is aware that you can do the same thing by using a wired USB-C cable. As a bit of fun we decided to find out if tethering via a wired link is any better than a wireless one.

At present a mass of rival networks are currently deploying gigabit-capable home broadband services across the United Kingdom and, as part of that, we thought it might be interesting to take a snap-shot of how much each ISP charges for their top 1Gbps (average 900Mbps+) tier. In the future we’ll look back on this to see how they change.

The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has this afternoon praised broadband ISPs for helping to create more than 22,000 new jobs over the past year as “forecasts for gigabit rollout are revised further upwards,” which is an interesting statement coming so soon after the Government’s decision to downgrade their own coverage target.

Gigabit broadband ISP Virgin Media has reported a week of extreme variations in UK internet traffic, which saw both the lowest level of upstream traffic in 2021 occur on Tuesday and then, the very next day, one of the highest peaks in downstream traffic hit their network (thanks to another massive Call of Duty update).

Some of TalkTalk’s UK home broadband ISP customers have suddenly found themselves unable to access lots of different websites (e.g. social media sites, the National Lottery and many more) after the internet provider’s network-level HomeSafe filter for “blocking inappropriate content” suddenly enabled itself, and wouldn’t disable.
