A new study from crowdsourced mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has examined how mobile broadband download speeds have changed, across 100 countries, since 5G networks were introduced. For example, average 4G and 5G download speeds in the UK were 39.7Mbps at the end of 2021, up from 21.7Mbps at the start of 2019.

Netomnia has today confirmed their second deployment location in Wales (after 55,000 premises in Bridgend), which will see them invest £8m to extend their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to serve around 29,000 premises in the coastal town of Barry (Vale of Glamorgan).

UK ISP BT has today announced that they’re making their home broadband social tariffs – ‘Home Essentials‘ –  available to sign-up for on the high street for the first time, which forms part of their response to today’s affordability report from Ofcom (here).

Three UK ZTE 5G Hub

New customers of mobile operator Three UK, specifically those taking their 5G based unlimited Home Broadband packages (priced from £21 per month), are now being supplied with a new hub (router) from ZTE. This appears to replace the prior model that was supplied by Huawei (their 4G hub also moved to ZTE last year).

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media / VMO2) has today pledged to extend their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) network coverage to reach 50% of the UK’s population in 2023 (not to be confused with geographic coverage). At the same time, they’ve also revealed that their 5G network already reaches 64% of London’s population.

Ofcom has published their latest report on the availability and take-up of cheaper broadband social tariffs from UK ISPs, which finds that – out of an estimated 4.2 million households in receipt of Universal Credit – just 55,000 homes have taken such a package (1.2% of those eligible). The regulator calls on all providers to do more.

Cambridgeshire-based UK ISP Connect Fibre (Fibre Assets Ltd.) has today secured a “significant” new investment from Foresight Group LLP, which will enable them to rollout a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 100,000 premises across the East of England.

Broadband ISP Quickline has today claimed to be the “first” company in the UK to offer Standalone 5G (SA) technology, which will be used to bring superfast and ultrafast broadband speeds to rural areas. The first services will offer speeds of up to 450Mbps, but there are “plans” to hit “gigabit capability” by summer 2022.

At the start of this year we noted that Netomnia were set to extend their UK rollout of a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to more of Scotland, with Hamilton being one of their targets (here). Today the operator has confirmed that they will invest £21m on the town’s build for “almost” 70,000 premises.

The Complete Technology Group (CTG), which manages and audits broadband installations on behalf of landlords, has secured an investment of £125 million from InfraRed Capital Partners (InfraRed) to help them improve fibre optic connectivity in over 700,000 homes across the United Kingdom.

A new newspaper report today states that Virgin Media (VMO2) has moved to cancel their 5-year Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement with Vodafone UK, which was signed prior to the £31bn merger with O2 and replaced a prior MVNO deal with EE (BT).
