Broadband ISP Wessex Internet, which is rolling out a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of South and South West England (Dorset, Wiltshire and South Somerset), has launched a brand-new app to help customers manage and monitor their account (billing, data usage etc.).

Hull-based ISP KCOM, which is deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire in England (here), has today replaced their previous Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Dale Raneberg – with the current MD of their Wholesale & Networks division, Tim Shaw.

UK ISP Giganet (formerly M12 Solutions), which is investing £250m to build a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 300,000 premises across South England (here), has announced that the company’s founder – Andrew Skipsey – is to step down after 19 long years.

Mobile operator EE (BT) today claims to have become the “first European network” to combine (Carrier Aggregation) seven different spectrum carriers via its existing 3.4GHz and new 3.6GHz channels, among others, in order to push 5G based mobile broadband speeds up to 2.2Gbps (Gigabits per second) in testing.

Alternative network ISP Country Connect, which last year began building a new gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in South Wales (here), has just celebrated having covered 2,750 homes and businesses in their initial deployment area. But that number could double by the end of this year.

Openreach has this week launched a new Ethernet (Ethernet Access Direct) product – EAD Rugged 1G – into the UK market that has been designed to replace their ‘Street Access‘ service, which enables ISPs to run a dedicated 1Gbps fibre optic line to connect street furniture (bus shelters, kiosks, lamp posts, cabinets etc.).

Cloud gaming ISP ZYBRE, which is available to broadband customers across both FTTC (VDSL2) and FTTP networks from various operators (e.g. Openreach), has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that it plans to launch a new multi-play home entertainment platform this summer via their new ‘One Box‘ TV set-top-box (STB) device.

Some consumers may be disappointed to learn that UK home broadband ISP Plusnet remains the only one of the major internet providers to have NOT joined Ofcom’s automatic compensation system, which is despite originally pledging to do so. The system first went live three long years ago. But this is, finally, about to change.

A few years ago we got the chance to test the performance of in-flight internet access on a long-haul British Airways flight from the UK to USA (here) – mostly conducted over water. We’ve now been able to run a similar test by going in the other direction, from the UK to Dubai (UAE), which mostly occurred over land.

Rochdale-based broadband ISP Zen Internet seems to have quietly removed any mention of the headline grabbing ‘Lifetime Price Guarantee‘ pledge (i.e. no price rises for as long as a contracted customer stays with them) from their product pages, which appears to have occurred at some point during March 2022.

City-focused gigabit broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which is currently embarking on a new plan to cover 2 million UK homes by the end of 2023 (they’ve already covered 825,000 premises), has today announced that they’ll invest a further £200m to help cover 400,000 additional premises during 2022.

Avanti, which is based in the UK and runs the HYLAS network of five large Ka-band communication satellites in high earth orbit (35,792km) for rural broadband and backhaul delivery across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), has been given a reprieve by a new investment deal that slashes its debt from $810m to $260m (£198m).

The Rotherham Council in South Yorkshire (England) has scrapped its original 2018 plan to deploy a free public WiFi (wireless broadband) network to serve the town centre area, which occurred after the chosen supplier went through some unspecified changes and showed a “general lack of engagement” in progressing the contract.
