The LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig) organisation, which provides an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has published its annual Digging Up Britain 2022 report and revealed that the majority of digging work is still being performed on behalf of the telecoms sector.

British bakery chain Greggs has teamed-up with O2 (VMO2) to trial a new scheme, which aims to help more than 255,000 people get connected by the end of 2023 – partly by supplying 15GB of “free mobile data” (mobile broadband) connectivity to families in need (supported via the Greggs Hardship Fund).

Broadband ISP Trooli has announced that their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which aims to reach a “minimum” of 1 million UK premises by the end of 2024, has now covered 220,000 premises and they will soon extend into Dorset and Norfolk. The operator has also expanded into new headquarters.

UK ISP Quickline has successfully connected up a number of small rural villages in the Coverdale area of North Yorkshire to a wireless 5G “ultrafast broadband” network, which forms part of a new £6.4m Government supported project – Mobile Access North Yorkshire (MANY) – that was first announced back in 2020 (here).

Mobile operator Three UK has reported seeing a “record-breaking weekend” of data traffic (mobile broadband) peaks. This included a Saturday evening high on the back of the Champions League final and the highest daily traffic volume on Sunday due, in part, to the release of Stranger Things Season 4 on Netflix.

A serious broadband outage that began in Wrexham (Wales) yesterday afternoon, which is affecting multiple ISPs and around 6,000 premises, appears to have been caused after one of Openreach’s contractors ended up cutting through their own fibre optic cable.

A group of five independent UK broadband ISPs – Gigabit Networks, Triangle Networks, Air Broadband, Highnet and Trunk Networks – have formed a new consortium called the ‘Rebel Alliance‘ (Lucasfilm and Star Wars might have words), which appears to be demanding better service levels and lower prices.

Broadband ISP Wessex Internet, which is currently rolling out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of South and South West England (Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset), has revealed that they’re now home to 5,000 customers, including one who just got free broadband for life.

The large market town of High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire (England) has been named as the next to benefit from CityFibre’s rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The local build aims to “reach … almost every home and business” in the town and is being supported by a £23m investment.

Broadband ISP Connexin has announced that their £80m project, which aims to build a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of Hull and East Yorkshire (here and here), has now been extended into the market town of Beverley. The operator plans to start connecting customers “shortly“.

The Swindon Borough Council has confirmed that “all works” by CityFibre, which is currently investing £40m to deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the Wiltshire town, will be “inspected for defects shortly“. The move was prompted by “numerous” complaints.

The Welsh Government’s £10m Local Broadband Fund, which was setup in 2020 to help local authorities and social enterprises to deliver broadband projects to areas that need it, has been given a funding “boost” of £9m. The money will provide better connectivity to communities in Cardiff, Newport, Vale of Glamorgan and North Wales.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today published a Spring 2022 progress update for their £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout, which among other things adds new regional procurements in Norfolk and Suffolk and two local supplier procurements in Cornwall, potentially extending 1Gbps speeds to c.190,000 premises.

Network developer CityFibre has announced that they’ve committed £28m to help rollout their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across “almost every home and business” within the market town of Stockton-on-Tees, which is in County Durham (England).

Lancashire-based business communications provider and UK ISP Daisy Group has today officially acquired another IT and telecoms firm in the form of Communicate Better for an undisclosed sum. The move follows their recent acquisitions of broadband provider XLN Group and Premier Choice Telecom Ltd.
