A new Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch during October 2022, has unsurprisingly found that 81% of respondents think mid-contract price increases by broadband ISPs and mobile operators are “unfair” and 80% want more providers to offer fixed price contracts.

UK ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has today soft launched their first Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages over Cityfibre’s network, which marks the first time that they’ve offered products on an alternative platform to Openreach’s national infrastructure.

Three UK appears to have shunned Ofcom’s recent pleas for broadband ISPs and mobile operators to consider whether “large price rises can be justified at time of exceptional financial hardship” (here). Instead, the operator has adopted the same CPI (inflation) linked policy of huge hikes on their Pay Monthly plans as other operators.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk Business appears to have joined the Black Friday discounts by giving away the first three months of service for free to new customers across all of their various Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) packages, which offer download speeds of between 80Mbps and up to 900Mbps+.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has opened applications for 125 field engineer apprenticeship positions to help rollout their full fibre (FTTP) and 5g mobile networks across the UK. Most of the positions will be filled in London, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, Glasgow and Leicester.

Customers of global ISP Starlink (SpaceX), which operates a mega constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellites, have been informed that they will become subject to a 1000GB (1 TeraByte) data cap from December via a new Fair Usage Policy (FUP). But it hasn’t been confirmed for the UK.. yet.

Delays look inevitable.

BT has re-entered negotiations with the Communications Workers Union (CWU) to hopefully settle the ongoing pay dispute with up to 38,000 employees, which has so far resulted in 8 days worth of national UK strikes. The move comes only a day after the operator’s CEO, Philip Jansen, described the matter as “closed” and seemed to reject further talks.

The latest H1 2022 report into the broadband coverage of new build UK homes reveals that 99.03% of houses constructed during the first half of 2022 were connected to a gigabit-capable network (using full fibre FTTP and Hybrid Fibre Coax), which falls slightly to 98.03% when only looking at FTTP.

The South Western Railway and telecoms firm Evo-rail (FirstGroup) recently announced the people travelling on a 70km long stretch of their Main Line into London – between Basingstoke and Earlsfield – would be the first to benefit from the rollout of new rail-side 5G poles (masts) that will be used to deliver “superfast” onboard WiFi.
