A new study from economic consultancy firm Fideres has accused UK telecoms regulator Ofcom of “tacitly allowing” TalkTalk, Virgin Media (VMO2) and other voice-only landline providers (e.g. SSE) to overcharge consumers by up to £200 million since 2009 (£100m by TT, £50m by VMO2, and a further £50m by smaller providers).

Network operator Neos Networks, which runs one of the fastest growing, high capacity business fibre networks in the UK – spanning 34,000km and 550 exchanges, has today announced that its existing CEO, Colin Sempill, is to be replaced by Lee Myall, who joins the business from Kao Data where he is the CEO.

The FTTH Council Europe has today released their 2023 ranking of the European countries with the strongest take-up and annual growth of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) broadband ISP networks. Once again, the United Kingdom continues to see exceptional growth (42% in homes passed) over the past year.

A new study from SaaSGenius, which contacted ten of the UK’s “leading utility companies” to test the quality and responsiveness of their customer help desks, has perhaps surprisingly found that home energy and broadband ISP Shell Energy came top of the table with a customer support score of 80.1 out of 100.

The FTTH Council Europe‘s annual conference in Vienna (Austria) has today announced the winners of their 2023 awards, which among other things saw national UK network operator Openreach being named as the winner of their ‘FTTH Operator Award‘.

Network operator and UK ISP Connexin, which is investing £80m from Whitehelm Capital (PATRIZIA) to roll out a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of Hull and Yorkshire (here), has today launched a new SmartHome app for all new customers (it can be downloaded immediately after installation).

Broadband and mobile operator EE (BT) has today revealed that, as part of their commitment under the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, they’ve expanded (built or upgraded) their “fast and reliable” 4G mobile network to over 1,500 remote sites across the United Kingdom (up from 500 in Dec 2022).

Cable breaks and damage happen all the time on UK broadband networks the size of Openreach’s, and they’re usually caused by accidents, such as third-party contractors ramming their diggers into the wrong patch of ground. But only very rarely do we see damage as bad as the one caused by a landslip in Kent this week.

Telecoms analysts at global market intelligence firm ThinkCX have published a new Altnet Investment Scorecard, which attempts to identify the “winners and losers” in the UK’s rollout of full fibre broadband ISP networks by identifying the accomplishments of alternative networks in signing up actual new customers.

Gigabit broadband ISP YouFibre, which sells plans via Netomnia and Cityfibre’s respective Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks across different parts of the United Kingdom, has today reported that they now have a total customer base of 30,000 (up from 22,000 at the start of 2023).

Asterion-backed operator MS3, which aims to build a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband ISP network to cover 500,000 premises across the North of England by the end of 2025 (here), has today announced 22 new build locations for Yorkshire. Some 100,000 premises have already been covered.

Broadband and mobile giant O2 (VMO2) has today chosen Mavenir to supply its UK rollout of Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) technology. The supplier will also act as the prime integrator, providing its Open virtualised Radio Access Network (Open vRAN) solution for sites on VMO2’s mobile network.

The UK’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has today launched a new “Smart Data Council“, which aims to help cut consumer bills, such as by finding ways to make it easier for consumers and businesses to find the tariffs best suited to their needs, or reduce the “loyalty penalty” that customers face when switching providers.

New customers who take one of Shell Energy’s full fibre (FTTP) broadband plans, which are based off Openreach’s UK network, may like to know that the ISP has just cut another £5 off the monthly price for their first 18 month minimum contract term. The new promotion is expected to be available to order until 2nd May 2023.
