Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has announced that they’ve expanded their existing partnership with Currys, which until now was exclusively focused on Mobile, to also include the provider’s range of Home Broadband products for consumers.

Alternative network operator Broadway Partners, which is supported by sibling UK ISP Broadway Broadband and had been aspiring to deploy their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural parts of Scotland and Wales, has called in the administrators.

Broadband ISP Fibrus has today announced that the first homes to be reached via their £108m Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract in Cumbria (here) have just been connected, which occurs only six months after the formal announcement. A total of 60,000 hard-to-reach premises are expected to benefit by completion.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today updated their Network and Information Systems (NIS) guidance by lowering their thresholds, which will require UK Operators of Essential Services (OES) – such as top-level domain name registries, DNS providers and internet exchanges (IXP) – to inform them of less severe outages.

Openreach (BT) has today announced the next batch of 119 UK exchanges under ‘Tranche 12‘ of their project to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will also occur once over 75% of premises in each area are able to get FTTP broadband.

Back in April 2017 the UK Government allowed broadband networks in England and Wales to claim 100% business rates relief on new fibre infrastructure for a period of 5-years, which is a change that Openreach and other FTTP builders had long sought. So it may come as a surprise to learn that BT has never claimed this benefit.

Broadband ISP BT will this week expand the rollout of their Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) based Digital Voice product, which was only recently restarted with a smaller group of customers after a long pause (here), to include “all full fibre and a smaller group of broadband customers yet to switch to Digital Voice.”

Netflix’s crackdown on password sharing in the UK has finally revealed why they needed to discuss the matter with several major UK broadband ISPs (i.e. those that bundle their service with Pay TV products), including Sky Broadband, BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk (here). The new extra member and profile transfer features won’t work on such packages.

Broadband ISP Quickline has signed a £1m+ partnership with makepositive, which will help to enhance their customer support, field services and inventory management. The move will aid their plan to deploy a new full fibre (FTTP) network to 96 locations (55,000 premises) across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England.

Broadband ISP Octaplus Networks has apologised after they left some customers on CityFibre’s UK full fibre (FTTP) network, specifically those who live in Chester and were being migrated from troubled provider ZYBRE (Air Broadband), without internet access due to an “unfortunate error” related to network availability.

Residents in the rural Powys (Wales) village of Llangedwyn – including neighbours in Llanfihangel (and possibly others) – have complained after their long-awaited rollout of a new full fibre (FTTP) broadband network, which was due to be built by Broadway Partners, was put on hold due to the UK’s £5bn Project Gigabit scheme.

We’ve today returned to conduct our brief annual study of how much UK broadband ISPs are charging consumers for their top gigabit broadband (1Gbps+) tiers. The good news is that prices – driven by aggressive competition – broadly continue to fall, albeit not by as much as we saw between 2021 and 2022.

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has today revealed their progress and learnings from the first phase of the £6.2m “Fibre in Water” trial, which aims to test the deployment of fibre optic (FTTP) broadband cables through a live water mains (used for drinking water).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that they will conduct an initial pilot of their 3G withdrawal scheme in the Cheshire (England) town of Warrington from the week of 17th July 2023. This will be followed by their national programme, which aims to move customers off the old data (mobile broadband) network by early 2024.
