Abingdon-based rural broadband ISP Gigaclear appears to be expanding their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover another three rural locations in Essex (England) – reflecting an additional 3,800 premises, which forms part of the operator’s £140m investment in the county.

Network builder and broadband ISP 4th Utility, which is rolling out a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service to UK homes (SDU) and large residential buildings (MDU), has today been given a boost after Dutch bank NIBC Bank N.V. made a £25 million investment to help accelerate their plans.

The UK Government’s Department for Transport (DfT) has hinted that the ability of railway commuters to access free onboard public WiFi while travelling could be cut to help pay for the train service itself, which is said to be unsustainable in its current form.

Independent rural UK broadband ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) has today named 32 new locations across Scotland and the North of England – reflecting a total of 82,000 premises (homes and businesses) – that will benefit from the next phase of their work to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) appears to have unofficially begun the full national rollout of 100Mbps+ (110Mbps max profile rate) upload speeds on their top “Gig1 Fibre Broadband” package (avg. 1130Mbps download), which was previously limited to an upstream rate of 52Mbps.

Low-cost UK broadband ISP TalkTalk has apologised after customers in two rural villages outside Warrington, which are being served by their older UltraFibreOptic (UFO) based gigabit FTTP network on CityFibre’s platform, were mistakenly told that their service was due to be disconnected.

Ofcom’s Spring 2023 report into UK fixed line broadband and mobile coverage has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 48% of the UK (up from 42% in Sept 2022), while 73% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 70%) and 73-82% of premises can get outdoor 5G cover from at least one operator (up from 67-78%).

Network operator Freedom Fibre, which is supported by UK broadband ISP TalkTalk and aims to cover over 2 million premises in England and Wales with their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, has re-opened their “Freedom Fund” and is now offering more money to help community projects (£500 per scheme).

The UK division of Norwegian renewable energy generator firm, Statkraft, has commissioned mapping firm FarrPoint to conduct a study of their proposed Loch Liath wind farm in Scotland, near Loch Ness. The work could help to facilitate the rollout of faster broadband into remote rural communities in the surrounding area.

SpaceX Falcon9 OneWeb Satellite Launch

Space firm OneWeb, which is part-owned by the UK government, has announced that the final batch of 15 first generation (GEN1) Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast (100Mbps+) and low-latency (sub-100ms) broadband satellites – plus a single GEN2 prototype “Joey-Sat” – are to be launched on a SpaceX Falcon9 rocket today.

Abingdon-based rural ISP Gigaclear, which has already built their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 380,000 premises, have announced that the operator’s £10m network expansion in Surrey (England) is now starting to reach the villages of Gomshall and Westcott, with Wonersh to follow in 2024.

Customers of Sky UK’s sibling NOW Broadband (NOW TV) sub-brand, which in March 2023 reportedly said that it would keep their broadband and phone prices frozen (here), has now begun notifying customers of an imminent price hike that will be introduced from 5th July 2023 – hiking monthly prices by an extra £3.50.

Ofcom has today published their 2023 UK study of broadband ISP, phone and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaint levels, faults, repairs, compensation and install times amongst the largest providers. For example, TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (78%), while Plusnet secured the highest (89%).

CityFibre has announced that they’ve finally started the construction phase of their £15m project to rollout a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to reach across “nearly every” home and business in the Norfolk seaside town of Great Yarmouth, which was originally due to begin last winter.

BT Group has today published their latest Q4 FY23 (quarterly) results to March 2023, which saw Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network grow to cover 10.274 million premises (up by 702k in the quarter vs 810k last quarter) and EE increase their 5G Ready customer base to 9.12 million (up from 8.5m).
