Internet provider Cuckoo (Giganet) has moved to make its customer service more accessible by agreeing a new partnership with Sign Solutions, which means that customers who are deaf can now contact the broadband ISP using British Sign Language (BSL) via a video interpreter.

Oxfordshire-based full fibre network builder and UK ISP Zzoomm has added the small Yorkshire town of Richmond, which is home to around 8,400 people, to their rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network. The first customers are already going live.

Indian-owned Firstsource Solutions have confirmed that there has been a change in their long-running contract with Sky, which could result in up to 200 jobs being lost across their sites, such as in Belfast, Derry and Derby. The redundancies are likely to impact those working for NOW Broadband (NOW TV) sales, Sky service and Sky sales.

The Guernsey Competition & Regulatory Authority (GCRA) has ruled that the wholesale charges for broadband services on the English Channel Island, which are paid by ISPs and then passed on to consumers, should be lowered by 11% on average to create a “better deal for end-users while ensuring profits are reasonable.”

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a minions themed TV advert for UK ISP Sky Broadband, specifically their “Wall to Wall Wi-Fi Guarantee“, after BT complained it “misleadingly implied that customers would receive seamless Wi-Fi in every room of a house“, when in fact they wouldn’t and it didn’t include any extenders or boosters.

Broadband giant BT Group is facing renewed fears of a possible takeover attempt by French billionaire Patrick Drahi’s Altice UK today, which has once again increased its stake in the telecoms giant from 18% to 24.5% – just a shade under the level that might typically spark an investigation (another one).

The Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) has published their 2023 National Delivery Plan, which calls on the UK Government to help support ISPs to get more people in disadvantaged groups online, such as by cutting Value Added Tax on broadband ISP and mobile bills to just 5% (currently 20%) – similar to other utility services.

The situation at troubled internet provider ZYBRE (Air Broadband) appears to have experienced another twist after some customers, specifically those on Openreach based broadband packages, reportedly received a new email that stated the provider would be “ceasing” related services and switching users to a new ISP.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today confirmed that, “from next week“, new and existing customers who take their 500Mbps or 1Gbps home broadband packages will be able to enjoy updated upload speeds of 52Mbps (previously 36Mbps) and 104Mbps (previously 52Mbps), respectively, “at no extra cost“.
