Broadband network builder and UK ISP Zzoomm has today announced that the first customers in the Cheshire town of Congleton are now able to connect to their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) infrastructure, which follows only a year after the build itself (here) was first announced.

In news that will come as a surprise to nobody familiar with recent events. Troubled internet service provider ZYBRE (Air Broadband) has replaced the front page of their website with a notice to say they’ve “decided to cease taking on new customers” due to “continued pressures” that they’ve “not been able to overcome“.

Some customers of BT’s consumer products are being invited to trial TNT Sport ahead of the big rebranding under a new joint venture with Warner Bros. Discovery, which is currently scheduled to take place from 18th July. TNT Sports is the new name for BTSport – offering exclusive live TV sport (Premier League, UEFA Leagues etc.).

The Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), which is an arm’s length body of the UK government that exists to tackle unfair import practices and unforeseen surges of imports, has today recommend the introduction of new trade remedies to protect the country’s optical fibre industry from “harm caused by low-priced imports from China“.

As the UK rollout of full fibre (FTTP) broadband gathers pace, BT are increasingly turning their attention to the challenge of how to extract all of that valuable copper leftover from their legacy phone network. Initial trials have already taken place, and they now expect to extract over 200 tonnes of copper cable this year.

British registered OneWeb, which is part-owned by the UK government, and Eutelsat have demonstrated how fast the company’s new global constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based broadband satellites can operate when connected to one of Kymeta’s Hawk u8 user terminals, mounted on a 4×4 Land Rover Discovery.

Global Wireless Solutions has today published the results of a confusing new study that measured the network performance of operators that have combined their mobile and broadband ISP businesses. Overall, the study found that the fastest download speeds by a combined provider were seen by Virgin Media O2 (138Mbps average).

O2 (VMO2) has today confirmed that they will either build or upgrade a total of 30 masts in Jamie Stone MP’s constituency – Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross – over the “next few months“, which forms part of the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project to help boost 4G (mobile broadband) coverage.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that they’ve deployed another 411 small cells (tiny base stations) on UK street furniture and buildings in order to boost the coverage and speed of their 4G based mobile broadband network (total of 611), which they claim allows customers to “take advantage of download speeds of up to 300Mbps.”

Abingdon-based alternative network and UK ISP Gigaclear, which has built a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 380,000 premises in rural areas, has today secured fresh equity investment from Equitix – worth “up to” £420m – and raised their target to cover “over” 1 million premises by 2027.

Reports indicated that the UK broadband and mobile giant, BT Group, will freeze the base pay of its CEO, Philip Jansen, at £1.1m – to be renewed on a rolling basis – until he leaves the company. Mr Jansen’s annual salary was fixed for 5 years when he joined, but this agreement was due to expire.

Rural UK broadband ISP GoFibre (BorderLink), which is in the process of deploying a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of Scotland and the North of England, has confirmed that it has “no plans for large-scale redundancies” after some workers were recently let go.

The Government (DEFRA & DSIT) has followed this week’s publication of its new Unleashing Rural Opportunity paper (here) by announcing that it has appointed the MP for Barrow and Furness in Cumbria, Simon Fell, to be the UK’s first “Rural Connectivity Champion” to support rural areas in accessing faster broadband etc.

The Welsh Government (WG) has released their Q1 2023 progress update on the £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with Openreach (BT), which confirms that a total of 36,869 extra premises (up from 35,770 in Q4 2022) have now gained access to their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.
