Ofcom’s latest quarterly (Q1 2023) study of UK consumer complaints has named and shamed TalkTalk for attracting the most consumer gripes about both fixed line broadband and landline phone services (making a change from Shell Energy), while BT did the same for both Pay Monthly Mobile and Pay TV services.

The BT Group has published a rather limited Q1 FY24 (quarterly) trading update to June 2023, which includes very few of the usual details but does reveal that Openreach’s roll-out of a full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network (coverage) grew by 718,000 UK premises in Q1 to total 11 million (up from 702k last quarter).

Alternative UK network provider Connect Fibre (Fibre Assets Ltd.) has just struck back in the tit-for-tat battle over which broadband ISP can claim to offer the “fastest” or “best” Wi-Fi performance guarantee. The provider has increased the speed promise on their home Wi-Fi guarantee from 30Mbps to 50Mbps minimum in every room.

A new survey of over 2,000 UK adults, which was carried out four times over the past year by YouGov on behalf of Point Topic, has found that respondents who bundled their broadband ISP connection with a TV product has increased by 8% year-on-year (i.e. starting at 35% in Q2 2022 and rising to 43% in Q2 2023).

Infracapital-backed UK ISP Ogi, which is investing £200 million to roll-out a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across 150,000 premises in South Wales by 2025, has signed a 10-year deal with Fontygary Leisure Park in the Vale of Glamorgan that will enable around 500 holiday homes to be connected to their full fibre lines.

UK ISP Quickline, which is building a gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) broadband infrastructure to 96 rural locations (55,000 premises) across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), has been awarded Safe Contractor accreditation in recognition of their efforts to ensure a high level of health and safety protections for their contractors.

In June, we reported on how Openreach were “exploring whether it’s practical” to deploy public EV chargers next to some of their 90,000 UK broadband cabinets (here). The good news is that BT, via their start-up and Digital incubation team, Etc. (that’s the actual name), plan to run a pilot that will “convert or upgrade” its cabinets for EV charging units.

Broadband ISP and network builder Lit Fibre has today announced that their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network has gone live in several new towns, growing its overall coverage of the UK to 140,000 premises (Ready for Service) – up from 100,000 in April 2023.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK has revealed that they’re now entering the “final phase” of their multi-year Redstream Evolution project, which reflects the work being conducted to upgrade the backbone of their nationwide network and boost their capacity for future growth.

The website domain for full fibre network builder and UK ISP Swish Fibre appears to have been offline since yesterday because, according to the notice on its holding page, swishfibre.com has “expired and is parked free, courtesy of GoDaddy.com” (i.e. somebody probably forgot to renew it).

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a website advert for a Sky Business broadband package – displayed in January 2023 – after BT complained that it had made a “misleading” price comparison, which involved a claim that customers could “SAVE OVER £750” by switching to Sky’s package.

Contract-free mobile operator VOXI, which is a virtual operator (MVNO) sibling of Vodafone UK, are now offering both new and existing customers the ability to triple their data allowance on their £12 and £20 a month data plans. On top of that, they’ve also added unlimited music streaming for plans priced £12 and up.

The move will enable them to reach into a new and particularly challenging area of remote internet connectivity.

A couple of years ago Vodafone launched what it called an “evolution in mobile phone plans” with their new 4G and 5G supporting EVO packages, which gave customers more flexibility over payments, contract lengths and smartphone upgrades etc. Today they’ve extended that to include other device bundles, such as laptops and tablets.
