Broadband ISPs from across the industry have said that they saw a UK internet traffic surge yesterday (30th August 2023), which appears to have been driven by the release of both the latest ‘Call of Duty‘ Season 05 Reloaded update and the start of preloading for Bethesda’s hotly anticipated game ‘Starfield‘.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has today moved out of the pilot phase for its new 4G and 5G capable Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) technology and begun their “volume deployment“, which aims to reach 2,500 sites across mostly rural parts of Wales and the South-West of England by 2027.

Internet benchmarking firm Ookla, which operates the popular broadband and mobile network performance testing service Speedtest.net, has revealed that 5G based mobile broadband download speeds have fallen across most regions of the UK over the past year. But despite this, overall data speeds (4G + 5G) have increased.

Infracapital-backed ISP Fibrus, which is rolling out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across Northern Ireland and the North of England, has today revealed that their network now covers 300,000 premises (up from 250k in March) and is home to 50,000 customers (up from 36,000).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has revealed that their 1.8Gbps capable UK Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers a total of 949,000 properties in Scotland (up from 800,000 in mid-March 2023), which is estimated to have cost them around £280m (assumes an average of £300 per premises passed).

Broadband internet service providers (ISP) are being encouraged to patch or mitigate a “grave flaw” in the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), which could allow a remote attacker to craft a BGP UPDATE message that can de-peer (reset) BGP sessions and disrupt the global flow of internet traffic or cause a Denial of Service (DoS).

Broadband ISP BT has today continued the region-by-region deployment of their Internet Protocol (IP) based home phone service, Digital Voice, by announcing that they’re about to start the roll-out in Northern Ireland, which will be followed this autumn by customers in the North West and across London.

Network operator CityFibre has today announced that their 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers 3 million UK premises (up from 2.5m in January 2023) and 2.6 million of those are considered to be ‘Ready For Service’ (up from 2.2m), which means that residents can place an order with one of around 35-40 ISPs.

Internet benchmarking firm Ookla, which operates the popular broadband ISP performance testing service Speedtest.net and the real-time outage monitoring Downdetector service, has used data gathered from the latter to reveal which online services suffered the largest outages during the first half of 2023.
