Hampshire-based network builder and gigabit broadband ISP, toob, which is both rolling out its own full fibre (FTTP) network and also sharing some of CityFibre’s similar infrastructure in parts of South England, has today announced a number of related expansions into Waterlooville (own build) and Chichester & Bognor Regis (City Fibre).

Broadband ISP Ogi, which is deploying a multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of South Wales, has informed ISPreview that the police have been called in after their new network suffered “extensive” damage in a “targeted attack” that left some customers disconnected.

The Government has today confirmed that 80% of the United Kingdom now has access to a gigabit-capable broadband ISP network, which marks good progress on their way to achieving at least 85% coverage by 2025, and then “nationwide” (c.99%) coverage by 2030. But most of the progress so far has been fuelled by commercial builds.

The Devon County Council (DCC) in England has confirmed that it plans to use £7.8 million returned by BT, which relates to the clawback (gainshare) mechanism in past rural broadband upgrade contracts, to help plug the local authority’s financial deficit – instead of reinvesting it into further broadband upgrades.

National telecoms giant BT (EE) has reportedly entered into talks that could eventually see them harnessing SpaceX’s global constellation of Starlink ultrafast low-latency broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which could be used to help improve both internet and mobile connectivity to remote areas.

Network access provider Openreach, which is currently in the process of upgrading all of their c. 29,000 fleet of UK diesel vans and cars to electric (EV) by March 2031 (3,000 have already been done), has given their plans another boost by reaching a deal that will allow their fibre broadband engineers to use First Bus’ existing chargers.

After a three-year battle, the Collective Action on Land Lines (CALL) campaign will this month finally take national broadband ISP and phone provider BT to trial as part of a £600m £1.3bn class-action lawsuit, which alleges that the UK telecoms giant overcharged 2.3 million of its landline-only phone customers between 2015 and 2018.

The new UK Criminal Justice Bill (CJB), which was first tabled in parliament toward the end of last year, includes a number of interesting new powers that can force Regional Internet Registries, Local Internet Registries or Internet Service Providers (ISP) to suspend internet domain names and IP addresses used for criminal purposes.

Starlink (SpaceX) has conducted the first successful live test of their new global Direct to Cell mobile roaming service with regular unmodified Smartphones, which came only six days after they launched (here) the first small batch of DtC capable broadband satellites. But at present it’s only being used to send and receive text (SMS) messages.

Broadband ISP G.Network, which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to homes and businesses across parts of London, has launched its January Sale for 2024 and discounted the price of their 300Mbps (100Mbps upload) package from £27 to £24 per month on a 24-month term (£32 thereafter).

Infracapital-backed broadband ISP Fibrus, which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across Northern Ireland and parts of North England, has revealed that their deployment in Cumbria has now reached 36,000 premises (including nearly 12,000 across the town of Workington).

Network operator CityFibre has announced that they’ve completed their project to deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across the Berkshire (England) town of Slough. The new network is now ‘Ready for Service’ across almost 42,000 homes, or about 80% of local premises.

Fibre optic network builder MS3 has apologised after a mistake resulted in several of its new telecoms poles being erected within an area of Hedon (East Yorkshire) that has Scheduled Monument status. The government-linked Historic England agency said consent had not been granted ahead of the work.

The UK Government’s Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has, in a new ITV interview with MSE’s Martin Lewis, raised a few questions after he proposed to ask the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to probe mid-contract prices hikes by broadband ISPs and proclaimed that the network costs for providers “don’t go up at all.“

Openreach (BT) are expecting to reach a record peak quarterly build rate on their new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network of 1 million premises passed in Q4 FY24 (i.e. end of March 2024), which is up from the 860K seen in Q2 (Sept 2023). Commercial build costs are also said to still be below £300 per premises.

Alternative network provider and UK ISP Zzoomm is in the news for a second time today, albeit this time to celebrate the fact that their new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Shiplake (Oxfordshire), which only went live on 20th December 2023, has already exceeded a take-up rate of 20%.
