The UK Government has published the New Year Honours List for 2024, which sees the CEO of UK ISP TalkTalk, Tristia Harrison, being named a Dame for services to telecommunications. The Founder and Chair of the Tove Valley Broadband project, Eric Malcomson, also picked up an MBE for services to his community.

As usual, we’re ending 2023 by taking a look back to see how the United Kingdom’s position, at least in terms of the top 50 fastest countries for both fixed broadband ISP and mobile (4G, 5G) data speeds, has changed since 2022. The UK fell from 44th to 51st for mobile and was unchanged at 56th for fixed lines.

Openreach (BT) has announced that they’ve managed to bring their gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to the remote Fair Isle, which is a tiny island that sits around halfway between Shetland and the Orkney islands (Scotland) – the longest distance (100km) they’ve been able to transmit a continuous fibre signal anywhere in the UK.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched a new consultation to investigate the possibility of launching a free city-wide public WiFi broadband network that would be open-access for everybody to use. The suggestion being that users wouldn’t need to go through the usual sign-up / login processes and could simply connect.

The tumbling share price of European satellite operator Eutelsat has effectively more than halved the value of the UK Government’s associated stake in OneWeb (currently worth c.£200m). The operator is now facing more pressure to secure a key EU satellite broadband contract, which won’t be easy due to.. politics.

Surging inflation has meant that the past couple of years have been, to put it mildly, an uncomfortable experience for many broadband ISP and mobile users. In 2022 most consumers saw their prices rise by around 9% (here) and in 2023 that hit over 14% (here), but the predicted hikes for 2024 won’t be as bad.

Hull-based broadband ISP Quickline, which is building a new gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) network across parts of England, has today announced that their network has gone live across almost 2,500 extra properties – the Lincolnshire hamlets of North Elkington, South Elkington and Acthorpe, as well as Eggborough in North Yorkshire.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE has today forecast that Saturday 23rd December 2023 will be the “busiest day for SMS delivery scams“, with criminals targeting shoppers in the last-minute rush before Christmas. The same day in 2022 saw 3 million SMS scam attempts being blocked by the operator – the highest number of the entire year.

Rural broadband ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) has announced that they’ve completed their first phase of build under the £7.3m state-aid supported Project Gigabit broadband rollout contract for North Northumberland (England), which has seen their network cover more than 1,100 hard-to-reach homes in three areas.

Alternative network operator Freedom Fibre has this week confirmed earlier speculation by announcing that they’ve signed an agreement with InfraBridge-backed VX UK Holdings ltd (VXFIBER) to combine their respective UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband networks – reflecting a combined total of 285,000 premises passed.

Broadband ISP Zzoomm has today announced that their 2Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which is being deployed across various towns in England, has now covered 185,000 premises (RFS) across 25 towns (up from 150k on 30th June 2023) and topped 20,000 customers (up from 12k at the end of May 2023).

Welsh broadband ISP Ogi has informed ISPreview that they’re having to “re-plan” some of their complex rural full fibre (FTTP) network builds in the Pembrokeshire area of South Wales, which occurred after they unearthed some “previously unknown challenges” during the engineering survey stage.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) and IaaS provider Ontix have worked together to boost the provider’s 4G mobile (mobile broadband) capacity across the busiest parts of the UK’s second-largest city, which began after they started deploying their latest small cells into the area.

A new Uswitch commissioned Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was conducted earlier this month, has claimed that 17 million people have “lost their broadband connection or had it drop out” in the last 12 months and the average number of such incidents experienced (i.e. those lasting longer than 3 hours) came out as 33.
