City-focused ISP and network operator Hyperoptic, which has already extended their full fibre (FTTP / B) broadband network to cover “more than” 1.4 million UK homes in parts of 64 UK towns and cities, is reportedly attempting to raise up to £500m of additional capital in order to continue their network expansion.

Network operator CityFibre UK has issued a progress update on their £65m project to deploy a 10Gbps capable full fibre broadband network across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) in Dorset (England), which has now reached 100,000 “homes” (although they confusingly interchange this with “residents” in the same PR).

Internet video streaming firm Disney+ has, following last year’s price hikes, today attempted to entice both new and returning customers to the service by launching a special, limited-time, offer that sells their “Standard with Ads” plan for just £1.99 a month for three months (£4.99 thereafter).

Alternative network operator and broadband ISP Truespeed, which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural homes in parts of South West England, has this year decided not to maintain their previous Price Freeze by hitting existing customers with a sizeable hike.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Manx Telecom, which serves homes and businesses on the Isle of Man (a British Crown Dependency) in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland, has confirmed that many of their customers will be hit by annual “inflationary” price hikes of 5.5% from 1st April 2024 (down from 12.5% last year).

Messages of confusion and anger have made their way into our inbox this afternoon after internet provider Cuckoo began informing some customers – seemingly those on Openreach’s network – that they were “sorry“, but they’re “no longer able to be your broadband provider” and are switching them to a different ISP.

A new BBC News report states that BT UK quoted one homeowner in the tiny Lincolnshire community of Wingland a hefty £101,874.60 to run a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to his property, which formed part of an offer under the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO). But this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

The Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency appears to have scrapped the relatively user-friendly website for their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which instead redirects interested consumers and businesses to a somewhat less user-friendly GOV.UK information page that lacks even a simple availability checker.

Mobile operator Vodafone has this morning echoed EE’s recent announcement (here) by confirming that they’ve successfully switched-off their 3G mobile (mobile broadband) network across the UK. The related radio frequencies will now be repurposed to strengthen faster 4G and 5G services, but there’s a small catch.

The CEO of broadband and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2), Lutz Schüler, has – perhaps predictably – raised competition concerns over the proposed mobile merger between Vodafone and Three UK, not least because he believes the pair will end up controlling too much radio spectrum. Network sharing is another issue.
