Ofcom UK Explore Reflective Surfaces to Boost Mobile Coverage

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published an interesting new white paper that, in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London, explores whether “reflective surfaces” could be used to cost-effectively extend the coverage of wireless broadband and mobile networks. But more research is required.

A growing number of customers on Vodafone’s UK mobile network are this morning reporting a significant service disruption, which appears to have started just after 6am and is currently continuing to grow. The issue appears to be mostly impacting 4G and 5G data (mobile broadband) connectivity, but others have also seen issues with texts.

Civil UK engineering firm Comex 2000 has announced that they’re expanding their operations into Scotland, which forms part of an effort to grow their support for Virgin Media (VMO2’s) rollout of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP infrastructure. This will also create 300 new jobs over the next 2 years.

ASA Bans Zzoomm Broadband Ad Over Misleading Savings Claim

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today banned a direct mailing advert for alternative full fibre network and ISP Zzoomm, which compared their 150Mbps broadband package with BT’s 35Mbps Fibre 1 service, after it was found to have contained “misleading” savings claims.

Vantiva Acquires CommScope’s Home Networks Division

Paris-based Vantiva, which was formerly known as Technicolor (they make a lot of budget broadband routers for ISPs), has today announced the completion of their acquisition of CommScope‘s Home Networks business. CommScope also supplies network technologies to internet and full fibre operators in the UK and elsewhere.

Wi-Fi Alliance Officially Certifies Kit for New Wi-Fi 7 Standard

The Wi-Fi Alliance has today official begun certification for the next generation of Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) capable wireless networking devices. The new Wi-Fi 7 standard is expected to “see rapid adoption“, with more than 233 million devices predicted to enter the market in 2024 alone. Just don’t expect to see those dizzy speed claims of 46Gbps in the real-world.

Wildanet Become First UK Full Fibre AltNet to be B-Corp Certified

Rural broadband ISP Wildanet, which is busy building a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of rural Cornwall and Devon in England, has today announced that they’ve become the first alternative network in the United Kingdom to be certified as a “B Corporation” (i.e. meeting key social and environmental standards).

Broadband, mobile and technology giant BT Group (inc. Openreach, Plusnet and EE) has this afternoon revealed the start date for their future CEO, Allison Kirkby, who will now officially replace Philip Jansen in the role on 1st February 2024. Allison was named as the group’s new CEO last year (here), albeit without a solid handover date.

(that is their actual name), has this morning kicked off the first pilot of an Electric Vehicle (EV) charger that has been repurposed from one of Openreach’s old street cabinets, which was “traditionally used to store broadband and phone cabling“. Up to 60,000 more could follow.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has today discounted their top 900Mbps Gigafast broadband package, which is sold over Openreach’s national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (available to 12.5 million premises), to just £42 per month on an 18-month minimum contract term (£63 thereafter).

For example, their 150Mbps and 900Mbps packages have now been reduced to £28.99 and £52.99 per month respectively on a 24-month term with free setup (rising to £33.99 and £57.99 post-contract).

One of our readers has spotted that London broadband ISP CommunityFibre appears to have significantly discounted some of their UK business plans, which for example means that their top 10Gbps (8.6Gbps average speed) tier can now be taken for just £350 per month +vat on a 36-month term (previously £730) or £300 for 60-months.
