Neos Networks, which runs one of the biggest 34,000km long business fibre networks in the UK – spanning 550 exchanges, 90+ data centres and 600+ Points of Presence (PoPs), has this morning launched a new “rapid activation” service that makes it possible for customers to order and use their high-capacity optical connectivity in just 5-10 days.

Alternative network builder and ISP Grain (Grain Connect) has informed ISPreview that their new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is to be rolled out in the East Staffordshire market town of Burton upon Trent. The first works are due to get underway this month.

London-based broadband provider Pulse Fibre, which focused on deploying Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) internet connections into new UK build home developments and MDUs (here), have this week said it is “proud to reaffirm its commitment to price stability” in light of Ofcom’s new regulations banning certain mid-contract price increases (here).

Zen Internet CEO Launching The Fibre Hub in London

Rochdale-base UK ISP Zen Internet has today officially launched The Fibre Hub, which essentially aggregates access to a number of major and smaller alternative full fibre broadband networks (Openreach, CityFibre, Trooli, Freedom Fibre etc.) and offers that up to partners (e.g. other ISPs) at the wholesale level.

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today published their annual Media Use and Attitudes 2025 report, which among other things has revealed that the proportion of UK adults with home internet access remains plateaued at 94% in 2024. But the majority of adults without internet access at home report a lack of interest in having it.

Alternative network operator and UK ISP LightSpeed Broadband, which has already deployed their gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 250,000 premises across the East of England and Midlands, has today become the latest provider to adopt Amazon’s range of Wi-Fi 7 capable eero routers.

A relatively new Liverpool-based alternative network operator called River City Networks, which was incorporated on 30th May 2023 and has one Director (Matthew Wilson), has revealed that it plans to deploy a new “gigabit dual fibre and wireless” network to serve premises in several UK cities, specifically in Liverpool, Manchester and London.

The Broadband Forum has begun interoperability testing for the next generation of 50Gbps and 25Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable fibre optic broadband technologies, 50G-PON and 25GS-PON. Participating companies included Adtran, Broadcom, Calix, CIG, Cortina Access, Gemtek, Lambda Networks, MT2, Nokia, Sagemcom, and Vantiva.

New research from Point Topic has revealed that global fixed broadband lines grew by 0.91% or 13.5 million in Q4 2024 (down from 1.44% in Q3 2024) to total 1.5 billion connections. The subscriber growth rate of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) networks also remained strong in the UK at 11.7%, putting us just two places behind the leading countries for growth.

New customers who fancy giving Vodafone’s mobile network (4G and 5G) a try in London can now do so for free for seven days as part of a new eSIM based trial, which will give you 50GB of data (mobile broadband), 500 minutes and 500 texts and all without changing your number. But various other cities and locations will soon be able to do the same.

The government has rejected an Openreach (BT) supported amendment to the new Renters’ Rights Bill (RRB) for England, which aimed to make it easier to deploy gigabit broadband into large residential buildings (blocks of flats / apartments) where deployment has been unreasonably refused or landlords cannot be contacted. But they claim to be “actively working” on a solution.

Hull-based network operator MS3, which has already deployed their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network across 234,000 premises (207k RFS) in the North of England and connected 18,000 customers (mostly in the Hull and Humber region), have started notifying staff of redundancies as they switch to commercialise the network.

A new preview of the TalkTalk group’s next set of annual accounts has reportedly revealed that the UK internet provider is continuing to haemorrhage broadband customers. The latest figure puts them at around 3.2 million customers as of February 2025 (down from 3.6m last year).

Rural-focused UK ISP Quickline, which is deploying a gigabit-capable full fibre (FTTP) and fixed wireless (FWA) broadband network across rural parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in England, has announced the opening of a new facility and logistics Hub in Leeds to support their ongoing network build and training for future engineers.

Openreach (BT) has released the next May 2025 batch of exchanges (Tranche 20) in their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” programme, which reflects areas where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre lines and will thus stop selling copper based legacy phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product option).

Mobile operator O2 UK (Virgin Media) has today announced, in a “railway first“, that 4G and hopefully 5G connectivity too (mobile broadband) has received a “major boost” after the London North Eastern Railway (LNER), Network Rail and the private sector completed deployment of a new custom-built Distributed Antenna System (DAS).

Back in November 2024 we reported that global tech company Dotlines (Dotlines UK) were preparing to launch a new broadband ISP called Carnival Internet UK during “early 2025” (here). The good news today is that this has now gone live and pledges to donate 1% of customer bills to charities to fight digital poverty in the UK (they’ll also plant one tree or kelp plant for every month a customer stays).
