Mobile network provider giffgaff, which is owned by Telefónica and harnesses O2’s virtual operator (MVNO) platform in the UK, has moved to encourage more people to cash in their old phones by offering an additional £40 incentive via their recycle service.

Internet service provider Cuckoo, which is the consumer broadband outlet for the associated AllPoints Fibre (Fern Trading) network – as well as several third-party full fibre operators (Openreach, CityFibre), has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve had to put a sizeable proportion of their current staff under notice of potential redundancy.

At present, it’s already quite well known that the UK’s major home broadband ISPs (BT, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband, EE, Plusnet, TalkTalk etc.) block customers from accessing websites that have been found, via the High Court, to facilitate internet copyright infringement (piracy). But now Content Delivery Network (CDN) provider Cloudflare has started doing the same.

Internet provider Sky Broadband has today confirmed that, as per last week’s partial launch announcement (here), their new Full Fibre 2.5 Gigafast+ (2.5Gbps) and Full Fibre 5 Gigafast+ (5Gbps) packages are now available to order online via CityFibre’s growing UK FTTP broadband network (available to c.4.5 million homes).

Network operator Freedom Fibre, which has so far grown their FTTP (XGS-PON) based gigabit broadband network to cover 350,000 premises across various parts of England and North Wales, has today made a new 160Mbps and faster 2.5Gbps (2500Mbps) tier available to their broadband ISP partners at wholesale.

Edinburgh-based ISP and network builder GoFibre has secured a fourth contract under the UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit scheme. The new deal is worth £105m (state aid) and will see them expand their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover “around” 63,000 premises in hard-to-reach rural areas of North East Scotland.

Network benchmarking firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net website and App, have published the results of their Q1-Q2 2025 study into the video streaming performance of 5G mobile networks and awarded Vodafone the best on a score of 85.29 out of 100. But none of the operators performed particularly poorly.

Telecoms giant BT and Openreach are appealing a recent decision by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), which made them subject to public information requests about their UK broadband network under the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR). The decision could potentially provide communities and rivals with a new avenue for extracting useful info.

A newly published study from researchers at the University of California (Department of Physics and Astronomy) has found that Starlink’s (SpaceX) second generation (v2) broadband satellites, which sit in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO), are darker than V1s despite being much larger (both bus and solar arrays). The results represent good news for astronomers.

Mobile network operator Vodafone (VodafoneThree) has this week begun to roll-out a new “Fix & Go” service to certain UK stores, which offers consumers “on any network” an “affordable and reliable” way to get their Samsung, Apple and Google handsets fixed in-store by one of the operator’s repair specialists.

Mobile operator EE has today announced that they’ve worked with the Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG) to deliver “enhanced connectivity” across all three terminals at Manchester Airport. The upgrade involved the deployment of a new Distributed Antenna System (DAS) to boost indoor coverage and capacity.

Broadband and telecoms giant BT (EE) has published a new report from Assembly Research, which suggests that the UK is one of the hardest countries for building new mobile broadband infrastructure and has called for more reform of the planning rules (e.g. allowing taller masts). The prize, claims the report, could be to unlock up to £230bn in economic benefits by 2035.

More hosepipe bans are now starting to come into force to help tackle water shortages during the increasingly dry summer months. Partly as the response to that, the UK Government’s Environment Agency (EA) has recently begun recommending that people help to save water by “deleting old emails to reduce pressure on data centre servers“.

London-registered network operator EXA Infrastructure, which in 2021 was acquired by investment firm I Squared Capital, has today confirmed the completed deployment of a new 1,200km fibre optic network route that will connect London in England to Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Brussels.

Digital infrastructure builder CityFibre has today announced that they’ve reached a crucial UK funding agreement worth £2.3bn (mix of debt and equity). The deal will support the ongoing deployment of their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network and also drive a new wave of consolidation.

New research from Broadband Genie and OnePoll, which surveyed a total of 3,997 broadband bill payers in the UK between July and November 2024, has revealed that 60% of respondents are out-of-contract – varying between a peak of 64% for those aged 65+ and a low of 55% for those aged 18-24. But many of these could be paying extra by failing to switch ISP.
