RootMetrics has published its latest biannual study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the city of London (England), which conducted 88,670 tests during March 2014 to reveal that EE still deliver the fastest download (17.8Mbps) and upload (9.3Mbps) speeds. But rivals O2, Three UK and Vodafone are improving.

Mobile operator Three UK has, much as we predicted last month (here), today dropped unlimited Mobile Broadband Tethering support from its “all-you-can-eat” data based tariffs and replaced it with a 2GB (GigaByte) usage cap. On the upside.. calls to 0800, 0808 and 0500 numbers are now free from mobiles too.

Fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear has announced that firms on the Kingston Business Park (Kingston Bagpuize) in Oxfordshire now have the ability to order an up to 10,000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based Internet service, which is a lot better than BT’s old up to 8Mbps ADSL connectivity.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, has told a select committee meeting that some of the recent criticism directed towards his £1.2bn scheme to improve the availability of superfast broadband has been “slightly unfair“. But he is prepared to look at the “possibilities” of BT having an unfair monopoly on related contracts.

The CEO of Business ISP XLN Telecom, Christian Nellemann, has said that the national rollout of superfast broadband technology is “crucial” to the United Kingdom’s small and medium sized businesses but called for the government to stop helping BT “maintain a monopoly on fibre services“.

Some of the country’s broadband ISPs have told ISPreview.co.uk that Rights Holders are putting pressure on them to prevent their broadband customers from being able to access two extra website (EZTV and Yify-Torrents), which have both been accused of facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has launched several new promotions including one that offers their unlimited broadband and free weekend calls bundle at half price (£5) for 12 months (6 months half price on their superfast FTTC package) or FREE if you take the Sky Sports pack. A £100 M&S Voucher is also available on their TV bundle.

Residents, visitors and businesses in the centre of Hull in East Yorkshire (England) can now access a new network of free “high-speed” wireless internet (WiFi) hotspots after local telecoms operator, KC, began installing access points on the city’s aging public phone boxes.

The latest quarterly results from O2 UK (BE Broadband) appear to suggest that the ISPs fixed line home broadband customers have been climbing over themselves to escape the forthcoming migration to Sky Broadband (BSkyB) as subscriber figures fell by a staggering -40,700 in Q1-2013 to total 519,400.

The Durham County Council (DCC) in North East England (UK) has today signed a new state aid supported £24 million deal with BT that will see “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC and FTTP) services being rolled out to “around” 94% of local premises by the end of 2016.
