After a long wait Virgin Media has announced that existing UK customers of their broadband, phone and TV bundles will now be able to take advantage of a FREE upgrade to the cable operator’s new 4K Ultra-High Definition (UHD) ready V6 set-top-box. The offer comes with no re-contract requirements.

The YouView platform, which produces hardware and software to support the broadband-based TV (IPTV) services supplied via BT and TalkTalk (as well as retail set-top-boxes), appears set to stop distributing universal software / feature updates and will start adopting a more ISP-specific approach.

After years of disagreement it has this morning been announced that BT and Sky have finally settled their long-running dispute over access to premium TV channels, which means that customers of both operators in the UK will soon gain access to a much wider array of content. The Sky-owned broadband ISP and UK video streaming provider, NOW TV, has today finally added the popular SyFy TV channel to their platform. The new channel is available to those who include an ‘Entertainment Pass‘ for £7.99 per month into their monthly subscription.

The BBC has announced that their video streaming iPlayer service will, from Sunday 10th December 2017, release the full TV series of Blue Planet II in 4K (UltraHD) and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video quality as part of an initial trial. But you’ll need a good broadband connection and the right kit to view it.

The BT Group has published their latest results for Q3 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base add 22K subscribers to total 9,307,000 (up from 19K in Q2 vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.285 million “fibre broadband” FTTC/P users (up by 179K vs 170K in Q2 and 211K in Q1).

One of the most popular broadband-based unlimited Movie and TV video streaming services, Netflix, has increased the price of their HD quality Standard Plan and 4K friendly Premium Plan for new customers by 50p and £1 respectively. In fairness, their last increase was in 2015.

Internet provider TalkTalk has cut the price of their up to 38Mbps (9.5Mbps upload) “Faster Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) and phone line rental package back down to £25 per month for the first 18 months of service (£33.50 thereafter), which will be available to order until 14th September 2017.

After a chaotic start to the year BT has today published their latest report for Q2 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base reach a total of 9,286,000 subscribers (up by 19K vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.1 million “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) users (up 170K vs 211K in Q1).

The English Premier League has won a new High Court Order in London this week that will require broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom to block servers that are hosting “illegal streams” of its football matches, specifically those involving the entire 2017/18 Premier League season.

Internet provider TalkTalk appears to be making a more aggressive move to grab a bigger share of the premium Pay TV market today by reducing the price of their broadband based triple-play TV bundles and cutting the price of the Sky Sports and Sky Cinema add-ons by 75% and 50% respectively.

A BBC commissioned ComRes interview of 1,000 adults who are regular viewers of Premier League Football has revealed that 47% have used their broadband connections to stream live matches from pirated sources (e.g. unofficially modified Kodi boxes or “illegal” steaming sites).

Telecoms and broadband giant BT has boosted their premium TV credentials today by acquiring the rights to broadcast all of the European Rugby Champions Cup and the European Rugby Challenge Cup matches live in the UK and Ireland, which will start from the 2018/19 season and run until at least 2021/22.

Competition between the Internet video streaming giants is hotting up after Amazon Video added 40 live TV and on-demand channels (e.g. Discovery, Eurosport) to their £79/year or £7.99/month ‘Prime’ service, although you’ll have to pay an extra monthly fee for each (from £1.49).
