The curse of dubious categorisation has struck the land of censorship again after news site TorrentFreak.com criticised Sky Broadband for including it under the ‘File Sharing’ category of their new network-level Internet filtering service (Sky’s Broadband Shield), which acts as a Parental Control for “adult content“.

The latest consumer Internet speed testing data for December 2013 reveals that Virgin Media has maintained its position as the fastest broadband ISP with a download speed of 35.387Mbps (Megabits per second). By contrast the overall national average download speed for all the largest providers was 18.376Mbps and uploads hit 3.320Mbps.

Several major broadband ISPs, including BT and Sky Broadband (BSkyB), have both reported record breaking levels of Internet traffic over Christmas Day compared with the same time last year. For example, BT’s consumer data traffic peaked at 10pm with a transfer rate of 1,086,822 Megabits per second.

The tit for tat advertising war appears to be continuing after a complaint by Sky Broadband (BSkyB) successfully resulted in the banning of another national press advert for BT’s Broadband services, which boldly said “Official. BT Broadband offers better overall performance than Sky and TalkTalk“.

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today unveiled a new version (SR102) of their original Sky Hub (SR101) wireless router, which improves upon the old model by being coloured in “stylish black” and integrating a VDSL modem so that customers who adopt their FTTC superfast broadband (Sky Fibre) package no longer need to use a separate modem from BTOpenreach.

Ofcom’s on-going review into the United Kingdom’s fixed telecoms market took a new turn today after ISPs Sky Broadband and TalkTalk accused BT of using “accounting tricks” to make the price of UK unbundled (LLU) Internet and phone lines more expensive for rival ISPs, which usually gets passed onto consumers.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has slashed the price of its unlimited web-based Internet TV and Movie (video streaming) service, NOW TV, from £15 to £8.99 per month in the hope of becoming more competitive with rivals like Netflix and LOVEFiLM (note: the 24 hour Sky Sports Day Pass remains £9.99).

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today published its latest quarterly results to 30th September 2013, which saw their consumer broadband subscribers grow by +111,000 during Q3 to total 5,017,000. Naturally this is sharply down from the +519,000 added in Q2 when O2 and BE Broadband’s former fixed line customers were merged into the total.
