The Monmouthshire County Council in Wales has today confirmed that the £155k rollout contract for a new “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) network, which aims to cover around 480 premises in remote rural areas, has been awarded to UK Fixed Wireless Access ISP Broadway Partners (Broadway Broadband).

The trouble prone Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project, which recently took the decision to end their Phase 2 contract with “full fibre” broadband ISP Gigaclear due to significant roll-out delays (here), has confirmed that they don’t expect to sign a new supplier contract until around November 2020.

Cisco and CloudNet have begun live trials of their new OpenRoaming technology on Orkney (Scotland) via the wider 5G RuralFirst project, which aims to make it easier for mobile users to stay connected to the internet by allowing them to seamlessly and securely roam between different WiFi hotspots.

The UK division of Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy, Statkraft, has confirmed that they’re conducting feasibility studies into the idea of building superfast Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband ISP networks on their future wind farms in Scotland, which could be used to improve coverage in remote rural areas.

Fixed wireless access ISP Lothian Broadband, which covers remote rural parts of East Lothian and Mid Lothian in Scotland with speeds of up to 35Mbps, has appointed a new Financial Director – Jennifer Nicoll – and moved into a bigger office. All of this comes ahead of a possible network expansion.

After a long wait the Wi-Fi Alliance has today announced that their certification program for final hardware under the new Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard has begun and the first products have now been certified, which means we should all soon be able to access even faster wireless network routers, smartphones and other devices.

The Monmouthshire County Council in Wales has posted a new contract notice, which proposes to help fund a new 30Mbps+ capable superfast broadband ISP network that would serve around 480 premises in rural parts of the county (focusing on areas around the towns of Abergavenny, Pontypool and Usk – north of Newport).

Several industry sources have indicated to ISPreview.co.uk that they now expect the Government to water down Boris Johnson’s (Prime Minister) pledge to cover the United Kingdom in “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband by 2025, which will instead be replaced by “gigabit” or “gigafast” terminology (i.e. delivery by more than just full fibre).

Wireless broadband ISP BorderLink, which since 2017 claims to have deployed 72 relay stations across part of the eastern Scottish Borders and North Northumberland region (map pictured), has proposed the possibility of installing a new 4m high relay to serve rural properties around Peat Law (west of Selkirk).

UK ISP Sky Broadband has today taken the official wraps off their new Sky Hub (SR203 / Sky Q Hub 2) wireless broadband router and confirmed the launch of a new Sky WiFi Guarantee, the latter of which also comes with the existing “Boost” add-on features but costs +£5 extra per month instead of the current +£2.50.

Sky (Sky TV / Sky Broadband) has partnered with telent and the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to complete an upgrade of the legacy public WiFi infrastructure at a number of cricket grounds across the United Kingdom, which they say should benefit “hundreds of thousands of fans” with better coverage, capacity and network speeds.

Pure fibre optic broadband ISPs appear to be cropping up every month and today is no exception as we welcome F&W Networks into the club, which has an aspiration to deploy a new 100Mbps to 10Gbps symmetric speed capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to over 1 million UK homes and businesses by 2024.

Now this really is unique. One of the Government funded 5G RuralFirst testbeds on Orkney (Scotland) appears to be delivering “high-speed” wireless broadband to a number of remote rural properties by using solar panels as receivers for a new Light Fidelity (LiFi) network (i.e. Li-Fi solar backhaul).

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP Wildanet, which is working to extend their broadband network to remote rural premises in parts of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and possibly South Wales, has announced a new strategic partnership with the Connectus Group in order to support new IP services for businesses in Cornwall.

After yesterday’s Sky Broadband ISP news (here), which saw them soft launch a new range of ultrafast broadband packages, it’s worth noting that some of the provider’s Sky Q customers also appear to be receiving a new Sky Q Booster style device, which is essentially a WiFi extender for your home (set to form part of a new Sky WiFi Guarantee).

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP Airband has issued a short update on their state aid supported Fastershire contract. The provider is rolling out a new hybrid wireless and fibre optic 100Mbps+ broadband network to cover 10 rural communities (dispersed clusters) in Herefordshire (England), which has just gone live in Tedstone Wafre.
